March 23, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Saginaw Spirit News Release
Sault Ste. Marie, ON - On Friday evening, the Saginaw Spirit (29-30-9-0) open the first round of the Ontario Hockey League Playoffs against the No. 1 Seed in the Western Conference and No. 1 team in the Canadian Hockey League, the Soo Greyhounds (55-7-3-3) at Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. with national coverage in Canada on Sportsnet and locally coverage on 100.5 WSGW-FM.
The Saginaw Spirit enter the 2018 OHL Playoffs after missing for the first time in 11 seasons in 2016-17. The last time the Spirit were in the playoffs in 2016, they drew the No. 1 ranked Erie Otters led by Dylan Strome, Alex DeBrincat, and Taylor Raddysh. This year again, they draw Taylor Raddysh and this season's Hamilton Spectator Trophy winners, the Soo Greyhounds.
The Spirit embark on the franchise's 12th playoff appearance this evening. This is the third head-to-head meeting between the Spirit and the Greyhounds in the playoffs.
In 2008, the 2nd place Hounds knocked off the 7th ranked Spirit in four games and in 2015, the 8th seed Spirit fell to the 1st ranked Greyhounds, four games to zero.
The Spirit enter this playoff as the OHL's third youngest team (17.85 years old), with a combined total of 62 games playoff games experience. Five-year veteran Mason Kohn leads the way with 26 games played in the playoffs. On the other side, the Greyhounds have 313 games playoff experience among their roster, with Taylor Raddysh appearing in 54 OHL playoff games.
The Greyhounds took the eight-game season series against the Spirit, seven games to one. The last 10 regular season games at Essar Centre, home of the Greyhounds, have resulted in the Spirit winning four of those contests.
The Spirit are pleased to offer #SpiritNation the opportunity to watch Game 1 and Game 2 of the series from the Saginaw Buffalo Wild Wings location at 2690 Tittabawassee road.
Spirit fans in Canada can enjoy tonight's game on Sportsnet, the television broadcast partner of the CHL.
As always, the game will be broadcast on 100.5 WSGW-FM and www.fmtalk1005.com with live play-by-play provided by Joey Battaino and Dennis Desrosiers. The broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m.
