Colorado Crush News Release
Fort Collins, CO - It was a tough defensive game for both teams but the Tri-Cities Fever outscored the Colorado Ice 44-35. The Fever clearly learned from mistakes that were made two weeks ago in the matchup against the Ice when the Ice beat the Fever 55-28. The Ice had six touchdowns in that game. In this matchup the Fever limited the Ice to only two touchdowns, both of which occurred in the second half. This is the first time this season that the Ice didn't score a touchdown in the first half and the Fever limited them to their lowest point total this season.
The Ice failed to gain offensive rhythm and convert on key drives. They were 1 of 10 on third downs and only had 39 rushing yards, their lowest of the season. Quarterback Willie Copeland completed 232 yards and threw one interception. Runza Player of the Game, Phil Welch, completed five field goal attempts to keep the Ice in the game.
The Ice kept the game close for a while, as they were able to limit the Fever to field goals on three possessions in a row. Joe Thornton continues to be a leader on this defensive squad with 10 total tackles, a sack and a broken up pass. Harcourt Farquharson had his fourth interception of the season.
Despite the success the Ice had on defense they had 17 penalties that accounted for 103 yards; a season record. Although radio broadcaster for the Ice, Troy Coverdale, described many of the penalties called as "imaginative officiating" by the officials they still played a huge part in the Ice's inability to perform the way they wanted to.
The Ice has a bye week to regroup and rest. The next game will be at home on Saturday, May 10 at 6:00pm against the Texas Revolution and is the Tough Enough to Wear Pink night Hosted by IMS Heating and Air.
