'Cats rally late, beat IronBirds 6-1
TROY - Up by a run in the 8th, the Tri-City ValleyCats poured on four runs to cruise to to a 6-1 victory over the IronBirds Saturday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The win spoiled Zac Lowther's start for Aberdeen, who struck out 12 'Cats in the first five innings.
Both teams scored in the third. Kirvin Moesquit's sacrifice fly scored Zach Jarrett, while Andy Pineda scored for the 'Cats on a double steal.
The 'Cats scored the go-ahead run in the sixth. With two outs, Gabriel Bracamonte sent a sizzling ground ball past Trevor Craport at third. Arauz followed with a laser of his own down the right field line, which scored Bracamonte, but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a double.
In the 8th, Miguelangel Sierra (5) led off with a solo home run against Nick Gruener to make it 3-1. Pineda grounded out, but Meyers, Bracamonte, and Arauz all collected base hits. All three eventually scored, thanks to an error and a wild pitch, before Kyle Davis hit into a 3-6-1 double play to end the inning.
Lowther (2-2) finished with six innings, two runs (both earned), a walk, and 12 punch outs. In relief, Gruener surrendered four runs on five hits.
For the 'Cats (33-38), Colin McKee (2-4) picked up his second win of the season, striking out three in two scoreless frames. McKee took over for Carlos Hiraldo, who yielded just one run in his four-inning start. Luis Ramirez pitched the 9th, allowing two base runners before he closed it out.
SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS: Aberdeen (39-32) finished 0-4 with runners in scoring position, and left nine men on base.
Pineda swiped home plate on the front end of a double steal, his 19th steal of the season. He's now four steals away from third place on the ValleyCats single-season record.
Meyers recorded two hits for the second night in a row, and has scored in three consecutive games, and four of his last five.
UP NEXT: The ValleyCats have five games remaining in the 2017 season, three at Vermont beginning tomorrow, 9/3, and then back at "The Joe" next Wednesday and Thursday against the Connecticut Tigers.
Vermont Probable Matchups:
Sun: RHP Argenis Blanco vs. RHP Tyler Ivey
Mon: RHP Wyatt Marks vs. RHP Alex House
Tues: LHP Jesus Luzardo/LHP Ivan Andueza vs. RHP Juan Robles
