Montgomery Bears News Release
The Montgomery Maulers fell to the Lakeland Thunderbolts Saturday in a 34-21 loss that saw a five-touchdown performance by Lakeland running back Perry Tisdale.
Tisdale carried the ball 13 times and only gained 53 yards total. Still, with five touchdown runs, all either three yards or shorter, the Thunderbolts were able to squeak by with a win.
Montgomery was in possession and driving late in the fourth quarter with an opportunity to draw the score within one touchdown. However, quarterback J.R. Richardson was picked off by Lakeland defensive back Otheese Wells at the three-yard-line, ending the Maulers chances at a comeback.
Three times during the second half, Richardson and receiver Machion Sanders hooked up for touchdowns that put the Maulers within seven points of the still undefeated leaders Atlantic South.
Former University of Alabama kicker Brian Bostick missed two field goals and had another blocked in the loss.
Richardson went 13-of-25 for 172 yards while throwing three touchdowns and just as many interceptions. Sanders hauled in eight catches for 153 yards and three touchdowns.
On defense, Jamaal Fletcher, Archie Smith and Antoine Hill all recorded interceptions. John Harrell led the team with 12 and a half tackles.
Lakeland (4-0) will attempt to stay undefeated as they face the West Palm Beach Phantoms this weekend.
As for the Maulers (1-2), they will host the expansion Florida Frenzy on Saturday.
