Baltimore Mariners Look to Continue Championship Tradition

BALTIMORE, MD (July 15, 2010) - From Johnny Unitas and the Colts to Jim Mora's Baltimore Stars, and from Mike Pringle and the Baltimore Stallions to Ray Lewis and the Ravens, Baltimore has produced football title after football title. In fact it stands proudly as the only city to win Canadian Football League (CFL), National Football League (NFL), and United States Football League (USFL) championships.

When the Baltimore Mariners (15-0) host the Wyoming Cavalry (14-1) in the American Indoor Football Association's (AIFA) national championship game, known as AIFA Bowl IV, they look to add to Baltimore's proud football championship history; and make a little history of their own.

Mariners Head Coach Chris Simpson noted, "There is a tremendous professional football history in Baltimore. To win the AIFA Championship, and to add a small part to that history, would be a great accomplishment for this organization."

With a win the Mariners would become the first team in AIFA history to win a championship and complete the season undefeated. Also with a victory over Wyoming they would bring Baltimore its first indoor football championship, but also would increase Charm City's number of league championships to eight (Baltimore Colts 1958, 1959, 1968, and 1970, Baltimore Stars 1985, Baltimore Stallions 1995, and Baltimore Ravens 2000).

In hosting AIFA Bowl IV the Mariners are already creating a little bit of history. The national championship game slated for Sunday, July 25th at 4:00 PM at 1st Mariner Arena will mark the first football league title game hosted in Baltimore since the Colts defeated the New York Giants 31-16 in the 1959 NFL Championship Game at Memorial Stadium.

The Colts played Super Bowl III in Miami after winning the 1968 NFL title and returned to Miami for their Super Bowl V win over the Dallas Cowboys. The Baltimore Stars won the 1985 USFL championship in East Rutherford, New Jersey and the Baltimore Stallions won the 83rd Grey Cup in Regina, Saskatchewan. More recently the Baltimore Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa, Florida on January 28, 2001.

The Mariners know their place in Baltimore history and in fans' hearts must be earned, "Like anything; change is resisted. Much like the CFL Stallions, Baltimore was hesitant to welcome us in, but we have seen our fan base grow and grow and expect a strong, vocal crowd at the championship game. I am honored to have been part of bringing an undefeated season to the pro football history in Baltimore. However, a championship on July 25th will cement us in the history of Baltimore sports forever. That will be an honor and a huge step towards becoming a permanent part of the community I love so much," said Mariners General Manager Greg Justice.
