Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - It was another award winning day for two members of the Amarillo Bulls as the North American Hockey League handed out its divisional hardware.
Forward George Mika was chosen as a member of the All South Division team for his terrific season on the ice and Captain Matt Nehls was selected as the Community Service Award Winner for the South Division.
The divisional teams and honors represent the four divisions in the NAHL: Central, East, Midwest and South Divisions, as voted upon and selected by the league's 24 head coaches. The awards are based on performance during the 2016-17 regular season.
Mika, who hails from Naples, Florida finished the season with 30 goals and 39 assists for 69 points in 60 games. He finished just one point back of the league scoring title despite having a shootout win goal for his team that did not count in the final numbers.
Mika, who is committed to UMASS-Amherst (Hockey East), was chosen twice as the South Division Player Of The Week during the season and the NAHL Player of the Month for September on another occasion. He had 17 multi-point games and three times where he picked up four or more points in a weekend.
It was also announced that Defenseman and Bulls Captain Matt Nehls has been chosen as the South Division Community Service Award Winner. It's the second year in a row that the Bulls have won the Division Community Service Award as Joey DiBenedetto took it home during the 2015-16 campaign.
Nehls, a native of Boulder Colorado, attended every Bulls Community event ranging from March of Dimes, to School and Hospital Visits as well as helping out with the Amarillo Youth Hockey Program. Nehls also donated over 70 hours alone to the Snack Pack 4 Kids Program where he helped out by planting and maintaining the community garden, stocking the shelves and bringing his teammates along to team packing event nights.
The remainder of the NAHL 2016-17 season awards including the All-NAHL Teams, Most Valuable Player, Forward of the Year, Defenseman of the Year, Vaughn Goaltender of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, General Manager of the Year, Executive of the Year and Organization of the Year, along with the Academic Achievement Award, Leadership Award and Community Service Award, will be all be announced on Wednesday, April 26th.
