Brewster Loses See-Saw Battle with Berlin in OT

Brewster Bulldogs News Release

Brewster, NY - In a night filled with goals on both sides, it would take extra time, and a major penalty, to decide the game. Up until the overtime period, every time Berlin would score, the Bulldogs would answer with a goal of their own. Brewster refusing to fade away set the tone throughout the night, but it just was not enough as Berlin took the game 6-5.

Things got started early and often, with 5 goals in the 1st period. At 2;57, it was Tyler Prendergast getting things going to make it a 1-0 game. 93 seconds later it was tied off a goal from Brewster's Chris Wilcox. A minute and 20 seconds later, Pavel Kubena (NOT the one who played in the NHL, shades of the ever constant Phil Esposito confusion) scored to make it 2-1 Berlin. Halfway through the period John Scully tied the game for the Bulldogs, 2-2. Back the other way just a minute after that, Berlin reclaimed the lead for a 3rd time, as Pavel Mrna scored to make it 3-2. This lead would last over 20 minutes until the 16:22 mark of the period, as Nikolai Oklolbystin found the back of the goal to make it 3-3. Of course, it would change again, and not even a minute later, Cody Dion put the River Drivers back ahead 4-3. The Bulldogs would go on the power play late in the 2nd, and once again John Scully was the goalscorer, in a buzzer beating fashion, with only a single second left in the period. The Third period was a close defensive battle and both goaltenders stood on their heads. The Bulldogs failed to convert on a power play late in the 3rd and soon after, Cody Dion scored the goal that everyone thought would knock the Bulldogs out for good. Of course, the way tonight went, that wasn't happening.Just 33 seconds, Nikolai Oklolbystin scored yet again to make it 5-5 and send the game to overtime. The death blow would come in the form of a major penalty to Zach Hale who dealt a hit to Tyler Prendergast that sent him hard into the boards in front of the Brewster bench. The result was a 5 minute power play that would have lasted the entirety of the OT period. The Bulldogs nearly stole the show, however, as a defensive lapse triggered a Brewster 2 on 0 opportunity from Sean Maktaak and John Scully. Maktaak elected not to shoot, possibly intending for John Scully to get himself a hat trick with an OT goal. The good intention turned against them, as the puck missed, and soon after, Cameron Yarwood banked home the OT goal, the 8th shot of the sudden death period that Brewster just nearly got through.

For the Bulldogs, Nikolai Oklolbystin had two goals and an assist, John Scully had another two goals, and Chris Wilcox had a goal. Nathan Judd-Warren, Cory Giroux, and Patrick Harrison had two assists each. James Robbins stopped 35 of 41 shots for the loss. For Berlin, Cody Dion had two goals, Cameron Yarwood with the OT goal plus 2 assists, Pavel Mrna tallied a goal and assist, Tyler Prendergast added a goal, and adding two assists a piece were Andre Niec and Sean Poitras. Bradley Barone stopped 43 of 48 shots for the OT victory.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night at the Notre Dame Arena in Berlin, NH for a rematch as Berlin looks to take both games against Brewster who is now on a 4 game losing streak, and Brewster will look to avenge their loss of tonight's contest. For tonight's post-Thanksgiving contest, about 150+ were in attendance at the Brewster Ice Arena.
