San Antonio Scorpions News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (Saturday, October 10, 2015) - The San Antonio Scorpions kept their playoff hopes alive by beating Indy Eleven 2-1 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis. The Scorpions were led by Marvin Chávez, who set up both goals for the Alamo City boys.
The game winner came off the foot of newest Scorpion Kris Tyrpak, who scored for the second time in as many games played for San Antonio. In the 79th minute, Chávez worked his way into Indy's 18-yard-box and drew defenders towards him. As the Eleven defense converged, the Honduran international squared the ball for the Drippings Springs, Texas, native. Tyrpak hit the ball in stride and finished towards the far post past outstretched Indy goalie Keith Cardona.
San Antonio's two goals were sandwiched around the Eleven's, who equalized in the 69th minute. On a scramble in San Antonio's box, Indy midfielder Marvin Ceballos was able to lift a ball over the Scorpions defense and towards an unmarked Dylan Mares, who put away his fourth goal of the year to make it 1-1.
Giuseppe Gentile gave the Scorpions the opening goal in a match for the first time in a month when he scored in the 19'. San Antonio took advantage of a fast break opportunity and worked the ball through Chávez, who was playing a more central role than his usual wide midfield. Chávez dribbled unopposed into space in the Eleven's half and spotted Gentile making a run on the left wing. El hijo del viento sent a through-ball for Gentile that was perfectly timed as he broke through the Indy defense's line. Gentile looked up and saw where Cardona was positioned and then cooly picked his spot low and to the far post. The goal was also Gentile's first ever as a Scorpion and the third straight career account opener for a San Antonio goal scorer; Tyrpak and Stephen DeRoux scored their first ever goals for the Scorpions last week.
With the win and other league results, the Scorpions moved within six points of fourth place in the combined standings and the final playoff spot. Next week, they'll play the league-leading Fury in Ottawa on Sunday before traveling to Florida to take on the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers in a midweek match.
