Jacks Split Doubleheader with Acadiana, Get Fast Start in 2nd Half

July 6, 2015 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

John Caskey and Tyler Adams made an early lead stand up in the opener, but the Pump Jacks' win streak came to an end in the second leg of the doubleheader.

A little bit of rain and wind never hurt anyone.

The East Texas Pump Jacks split their doubleheader with the Acadian Cane Cutters on Sunday after heavy rain denied them a chance to play America's pastime on its 239th birthday.

John Caskey took the hill for the opener and held the Cane Cutters at bay for six innings, handing the ball to closer Tyler Adams for his league-leading sixth save of the season in a 3-2 victory.

The Pump Jacks offense spotted Caskey one run in the first inning and two more in the second. T.J. Friedl led off the ballgame with a single, and one out later Niko Buentello punched a single of his own to put two on for Dilon Argo. Argo knocked in his fourth RBI in three games with a single that scored Friedl from second base.

James Lear reached on a two-out single to load the bases, but the Jacks would have to wait one more inning to extend their lead.

Tyler Moore led off the second with a single, stole second base, and advanced on a groundout from Tristan Clarke. Friedl drove in Moore when he smashed an RBI double, and one out later, Buentello picked up his team-leading 13th RBI with a base hit that scored Friedl.

Caskey was able to keep Acadiana off the board until the fifth inning, when the home team scored a pair of runs with two outs. The Cane Cutters had two more runners on base, but Caskey defused the rally by getting league RBI leader Adam Yacek to fly out to center.

The Pump Jacks' ace returned to the hill in the sixth inning and retired the side with three groundouts. Caskey depended on the ground ball Sunday, registering 12 of his 18 outs by groundout.

East Texas loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't convert the opportunity, leaving it instead to Adams to put the game away. The Alabama freshman allowed a one-out walk, then finished the game with the help of Moore on a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play.

Buentello finished the opener 3-for-4 with an RBI. Friedl and Argo both posted two hits, with Friedl adding two runs scored and an RBI. Nick Roark reached base three times with a hit and two walks.

Caskey pitched six complete innings with two earned runs on eight hits to push his record to 5-1 on the season. His 1.25 ERA is the lowest among TCL pitchers with four or more starts.

With a chance to start the second half 4-0, the Pump Jacks weren't able to extend their win streak in the nightcap, falling 7-1.

Tanner Cable made his fourth start of the season in the rematch, and struck out seven over 4.1 innings pitched. Unfortunately, he was a bit wild, and his five walks and seven hits allowed saw the Cutter push across seven runs that were all billed to Cable's tab. With Acadiana up 3-0 in the fifth inning, Cable had a streak of bad luck that resulted in three-straight infield singles. A walk forced in the Cutters' fourth run.

Jimmy Johnson came in from the bullpen, inheriting the bases-loaded situation, and allowed a two-RBI single and uncorked a wild pitch that scored another before he could make the final two outs of the inning.

The Jacks made a dent in the top of the fourth when Roark singled and Joey Libby worked a walk to set the table for Alex Bell. Bell pounced on the first pitch he saw, smacking an RBI single that scored Roark from second base.

Bell finished the game 2-for-2, raising his batting average to .288. Friedl posted another two-hit game, and thanks to his 4-for-8 performance in two games, now leads the team with 26 hits.

The Jacks will get a rest on Monday, and select East Texas players will head to Victoria on Tuesday for the 2015 TCL All-Star Game.
