Altavilla Fans Eight Nuts, Blaze Win 3-2

July 3, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Blaze needed a dominant effort, and a dominant effort they received, as Dan Altavilla powered his way through seven stellar innings, and the Bakersfield Blaze rode two key hits to a 3-2 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.

A clean ballgame featured excellent defense and good pitching on both sides.

Antonio Senzatela (L, 4-4) got the starting nod for the Nuts, and making his first appearance in three weeks, looked solid.

In the 3rd, the Blaze pushed in front on Antonio, and never looked back. A groundout began the frame, but Aaron Barbosa walked and Nelson Ward singled, taking second base on a throw to put two in scoring position for Tim Lopes. The red-hot second-baseman delivered a two-run single to rightfield, putting the Blaze on top 2-0.

Dan Altavilla (W, 3-6) suffered his only blip in the 5th, giving up a run on three singles, but settled back in, immediately.

And the Blaze got Dan a big insurance run. With Johendi Jiminian coming out of the Modesto pen, Kyle Petty stroked a base hit to centerfield, plating Guillermo Pimentel, who had walked, and the Blaze went up, 3-1.

The Nuts got a run in the 8th off Aaron Brooks (S, 1) on a one-out triple and a grounder, but Brooks punched back, striking out five Nuts in two innings, including whiffing the side in the 9th, and the Blaze were able to hang on for a 3-2 win.

The victory moves the Blaze to 2-5 since the All Star Break with more in Modesto before the big July 4th game back home.

The series against the Nuts wraps up in a 7:05pm game on Friday night, with Alex Balog (Mod) taking on Tyler "Beastmaster" Pike (Bak). The broadcast will be live at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio. Dan Besbris has the call.
