Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, PA-Washington starting pitcher Luke Wilkins allowed just two runs to come across for visiting Southern Illinois in Wednesday morning's matchup at CONSOL Energy Park, but those runs proved to be enough for the Miners to edge the Wild Things by a final score of 2-1. Wilkins went six innings, striking out three in the midweek loss. Miners hurler Matt Bywater earned the day's mound victory.
Southern Illinois jumped out to the early edge in the top half of the second inning off of a solo shot from third baseman Steve Marino. The lone run was the only dent in Wilkins' armor until his departure in the seventh inning. He allowed just three hits after the Marino homer while being backed by solid defensive play.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Wild Things knotted the game at one thanks to a single from center fielder Danny Poma. The Miners regained their one-run advantage, however, in their next at-bat. After the leadoff batters reached on consecutive walks, a fly out from second baseman Frank Martinez was hit deep enough into right for Southern Illinois to score.
Neither team was able to score in the eighth or ninth innings, securing Southern Illinois' road victory.
The Miners and Wild Things will square off in the rubber match of their three-game series on Thursday, June 18. First pitch from CONSOL Energy Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Washington will remain at home for three days following Thursday's game, playing host to the incoming Frontier Greys.
