Jackson Generals News Release

Jackson, Tenn. - The Generals were greeted rudely in their return to The Ballpark at Jackson, as Montgomery came away with a 14-1 victory on Tuesday night in the series opener. Jackson tied a season-high with four errors, and infielder Dan Paolini made his professional pitching debut in the loss.

Jackson (21-25) was playing its first home game since May 15, as the team played 11 games over 10 days on the road while the Ohio Valley Conference hosted its postseason baseball tournament in Jackson for the sixth-straight season. The Generals had to play an evening game against the Biscuits a little more than 12 hours after getting back to West Tennessee from Pensacola.

The Generals showed no signs of fatigue early, as Jackson jumped out to an early lead in the first. Tyler Smith led off with a single against Montgomery starter Bradin Hagens (3-4, 3.81) and advanced to third on a pair of groundouts. With two outs, Smith scampered home on a passed ball by Justin O'Conner to put the Generals up 1-0.

Jackson had an opportunity to add to their advantage in the second inning, when the team loaded the bases on a single and two walks with two outs. Tyler Smith crushed a fly ball to centerfield, but Montgomery's Johnny Field Jr. tracked it down to end the threat.

That was as much damage as the Generals did against Montgomery starter Bradin Hagens (3-4, 3.81). Hagens needed 31 pitches in that second inning, but he only allowed the one unearned run on three hits in six innings to earn the victory.

Edwin Diaz (0-3, 9.88) cruised through the opening two innings of his Double-A home debut. He struck out a pair of Biscuits' batters while facing the minimum and Jackson took its lead into the third.

Montgomery (21-25) got to the highly touted righty in the third inning, scoring four runs on five hits. Four of the team's five hits went for extra bases ad the visitors jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Justin O'Conner, who led the way with three hits for the Biscuits, led off the frame with a double and later came in to score on the second of four Jackson errors in the ballgame.

Diaz gave up another run in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Tommy Coyle to put the Biscuits up 5-1. The righty allowed five earned runs on seven hits over four innings on Tuesday.

The bullpen behind Diaz struggled as well, as Jordan Shipers gave up a run in the sixth inning and Trey Cochran-Gill allowed five runs in 1.2 innings of work. The Biscuits batted around against Cochran-Gill and Grady Wood in the eighth, scoring five run on six base hits. It was the third-consecutive game and the fourth time in three games that Jackson's opponent has sent nine men to the plate in an inning.

Dan Paolini, who extended his on-base streak to 14 games with his single in the second inning, made his first professional appearance as a pitcher in the ninth inning. After allowing three runs on three hits and a walk, Paolini struck out Johnny Field Jr. to end the inning.

The Generals will try to rebound in game two of this five-game set on Wednesday night. Lefty Misael Siverio (1-4, 4.35) is slated to get the start for Jackson opposite Montgomery's Jaime Schultz (4-2, 2.38), who ranks among the Southern League leaders in both ERA and strikeouts. First pitch from The Ballpark at Jackson is set for 7:05 pm CT, and you can listen to all the action on the TJ Network (AM 1350, FM 94.1 and 94.3) starting with the Tennessee Army National Guard Pregame Show at 6:50 pm CT.

The remaining games in this series with the Biscuits feature a slew of great promotions. Thursday is a State Farm Agent Wes Harris Dollar Night, and Friday is Faith Night with Frankie Punkintown Smith as well as a Denny's Free Cash Friday! The fun concludes on Saturday with Night of Heart to support the West Tennessee Heart and Vascular Center and Postgame Fireworks!
