MASL Major Arena Soccer League

MASL Weekly - Week 18

February 25, 2015 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) News Release

Comets Complete Regular Season MASL-terpiece

2/25/15 - The Missouri Comets put an exclamation point on their perfect season with a 17-1 rout of the Tacoma Stars, finishing the regular season 20-0.

Leo Gibson scored the first four and the last three goals of the game and finished with a league record 12 points (eight goals, four assists). Danny Waltman allowed a season-low one goal to improve to 17-0, breaking Jesus Flores's old record of 16 wins set last year.

The Comets won their division by seven games over the Milwaukee Wave and won their games by an average margin of 7.2 goals per game. The Comets scored a league-high 12 goals per game and had the fourth best defense, allowing 4.8 goals per game. The Comets were number one on the power play, converting 63.27% of opportunities and their penalty killing unit was fourth best at 72.97%.

Gibson led the league in goals (48) and set records for assists (45) and points (93). Vahid Assadpour finished fourth with 61 points and Bryan Perez was 12th with 44 points. From the back, John Sosa (3rd), Brian Harris (4th), Alain Matingou (6th) and Andre Braithwaite (12th) finished among the league leaders in scoring by defenders.

In their three biggest challenges, the Comets rallied from 5-2 down to beat the Milwaukee Wave 9-7 on November 15. On New Year's Eve the Comets allowed the Wave to tie the game with less than one second left and in overtime a Bato Radoncic shot was stopped by an intentional Sosa handball, but the Wave failed to score on the penalty shootout and the Comets eventually won the game on shootouts. On January 25 the Monterrey Flash held a 7-6 lead until Missouri tied the game with 17 seconds left and won in overtime.

Going back to their tenure in the MISL, the Comets have won 25 straight regular season games.

Half a Million Thanks!

The MASL went over the 500,000 mark in attendance last weekend, more than doubling last year's record 214,522. The league average is up 77% from last year.

Leo Looms Large

In his first MASL season, Comets forward Leo Gibson took a flamethrower to the league record book. Gibson set new records for points (93), assists (45), and power play goals (15). The cherry on the top of a 20-0 season came Sunday when his eight goal and four assist night gave him a single game record 12 points.

Gordy Goes for 23

Thanks to a well-timed midseason trade Gordy Gurson played 23 games during the 20-game MASL season, 13 for the Seattle Impact and 10 for the St. Louis Ambush. Another beneficiary of a trade, Stephen Basso, will have a chance to play in his 22nd game this Sunday for Rochester. Only 21 players played all 20 or more games this season, led by six Missouri Comets players.

Attack of the Goalkeepers

The Milwaukee Wave have already seen their top two goalkeepers, Marcel Feenstra and Nick Vorberg, go down win injuries, as well as their replacement Jeff Richey. Now leaning on rookie Matt Eisold the Wave may be using an unorthodox strategy to keep him in one piece. The Wave used three different sixth attackers - Jonathan Greenfield, Mike Lookingland, and Victor Quiroz - in their 12-6 win over the Detroit Waza Flo Saturday. The Waza also went to Victor Otieno to don the sixth attacker jersey to try to get back into the game in the third quarter. In all, the teams used six different goalkeepers and made an unprecedented 30 goalkeeper changes.

How Low Can They Go?

Piotr Sliwa got the nod for the Ontario Fury for just the second time since being acquired from Seattle. He has given up double-figure goals nine times this year and he was facing the San Diego Sockers, so what transpired Saturday seemed entirely unlikely. Sliwa held the Sockers to just three goals, but lost 3-1 in a game that matched the lowest scoring game in the league's seven seasons. Chris Toth allowed just one goal and it came in the game's waning minutes as Ontario went to a sixth attacker.

Brownsville Three Over Saltillo

The expansion Brownsville Barracudas have only beaten one team this year, but they have owned Saltillo Rancho Seco. Brownsville (3-15) is 3-0 against 1-16 Saltillo. The teams finish the season by playing two games at Saltillo.
