San Antonio Missions News Release

TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight is game two of a four-game series between the San Antonio Missions and the Frisco Rough- Riders at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, TX. This will be the final regular season series between the clubs, with the 'Riders having taken 17 of the first 29. The home teams have dominated the season series, especially Frisco, who is 10-3 vs. San Antonio at Dr Pepper Ballpark. In their 13 games in Frisco, the Missions have been outscored 68-38 in addition to being shut out four times. San Antonio (26-31, 62-65) enters play tied for third in the South Division, second-half standings, eight games behind first-place Frisco (34-23, 74-52) with just 13 games left. The eight-game deficit is the Missions' largest since May 17 (18-24, -8 GB). Their largest deficit of the season has been nine, which occurred after a 4-1 loss vs. Frisco on May 16. The RoughRiders currently own the TL's best overall record, the best second-half record and the best overall home record (39-25).

PITCHING MATCHUP: On the hill for San Antonio tonight is Leonel Campos, who will be making his 12th start of the season. After a successful transition into the rotation in mid June, Leonel has hit a rough patch over the last six weeks. Since the beginning of July, Campos has allowed 27 earned runs in 32.1 innings (nine games, seven starts). In his last start on August 15 vs. Northwest Arkansas, the 27-year-old right-hander allowed five runs on a career-high seven hits in four and a third innings. Though his ERA has spiked during his slump, Campos continues to put up impressive strikeout numbers. He fanned seven Naturals on the 15th against just one walk. Over his last three starts, Campos has put up an impressive K:BB ratio of 16:3. In 28 games (11 starts) with San Antonio this season, Campos is 1-5 with a 5.05 ERA and a K:BB ratio of 82:29 over 62.1 innings. Campos' mound opponent this evening will be lefty Andrew Faulkner, who is 1-2 with a 5.31 ERA in four starts with Frisco. The 21-year-old hurler began the season with High-A Myrtle Beach, going 10-1 with a 2.07 ERA in 21 games (18 starts). Faulker got his first win at the Double-A level on August 2 at Wolff Stadium after limiting the Missions to just one run on four hits and no walks, while striking out eight.

LAST GAME: Frisco scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to rally back for a 5-4 win over San Antonio in Tuesday night's series opener at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Cory Spangenberg led off the game with a homer to extend his hitting streak to 12 games (17-for-49). It was the fourth time this season a Mission has led off a game with a home run (2nd for Spangenberg). Frisco countered in their half of the first with Trever Adams' two-run dinger to left off San Antonio starter Josh Geer. It turned out to be the only two runs charged to Geer, who scattered 11 hits in his six plus innings. The Missions retook the lead against starter Jerad Eickhoff in the sixth with a three-run rally. Reliever Luis De La Cruz inherited a bases-loaded jam from Geer in the seventh, but preserved the San Antonio lead by striking out the side. However, an inning later, De La Cruz and right-hander Michael Dimock (2-7) allowed a three-run rally of their own. The key play of the frame was a two-out error by shortstop Diego Goris, which allowed both the tying and go-ahead runs to score. San Antonio loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the ninth, but Keone Kela (5th save) fanned Goris before inducing Cody Overbeck to hit into a game- ending pop out. Will Lamb (4-1) earned the win in relief for the 'Riders.

PROBLEMS IN FRISCO: Since the start of the 2011, the Missions are 3-19 in one-run games at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Since the start of the 2012 season, the Missions have lost 30 of 45 games in Frisco. They've won only one of their last 11 series at DPB over that stretch (1-8-2).

HOMER HAPPY: San Antonio has hit 105 homers in 2014, which is the 3rd most at the Double-A level. The Missions have out-homered their opponents by 34 this season and have a 60-48 edge on the road. San Antonio leads the Texas League in homers by three (Frisco). They have not led the TL in the category since 1992 when they hit 92. Last season, the Missions had just 76 homers through August 19.

PLENTY OF K'S: San Antonio pitching leads all of Double-A in strikeouts this season with 1052 (8.3 per game). In August, there's been a spike in the total strikeout numbers during Missions' games. San Antonio and their opponents have combined to average 18.1 strikeouts a game during the month (286 in 16 games).

GARCES SHARP IN DEBUT: San Diego could not hold onto an early lead as they fell to Los Angeles 8-6 last night at Dodgers Stadium. Former Mission Jedd Gyorko got the Padres out to a fast start with a three-run homer in the first off starter (and former Padre) Kevin Correia (7-13). The lead was short-lived however, as Los Angeles put up a pair in the second and three more in the fourth against San Diego starter Ian Kennedy (9-11). The Dodgers put the game away in the seventh with Carl Crawford's two-run homer off Alex Torres. Former Mission reliever Frank Garces (promoted earlier in the day) worked a perfect eight inning for San Diego in his major league debut. Garces struck out first batter, Erisbel Arruebarrena before getting both A.J. Ellis and Miguel Rojas to pop out.
