International League Names Players of the Week

July 14, 2014 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Gwinnett infielder Phil Gosselin and Pawtucket pitcher Steven Wright have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from July 7-13. Gosselin is the third member of the G-Braves to claim an IL weekly award this season, following Ernesto Mejia (April 3-6) and Joey Terdoslavich (April 21-27). Wright joins Carlos Rivero (June 23-29) to become the second member of the PawSox to be so honored in 2014. Wright also won the award once last season (July 1-7, 2013).

PHIL GOSSELIN, Gwinnett Braves IL BATTER OF THE WEEK

GwinnettÊ's Phil Gosselin led the International League over the past week with a .692 batting average, 18 hits, nine extra-base hits, six doubles, two triples, ten runs scored, a .714 on-base percentage, and a 1.192 slugging percentage. The IL All-Star collected multiple hits in each of his first six games this week, only failing to do so during the seventh game because, after starting 1-for-1, he was lifted for a pinch-hitter due to a pending promotion to Atlanta. For the season, Gosselin leads the International League with 120 hits, 27 doubles, and 172 total bases.

25-year-old Phil Gosselin is in his fifth season as a professional player after being selected by Atlanta in the 5th round of the 2010 draft. He made his Major League debut last season with the Braves. Gosselin is a native of West Chester, Pennsylvania.

STEVEN WRIGHT, Pawtucket Red Sox IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

On Wednesday Pawtucket right-hander Steven Wright stymied Columbus hitters with his knuckleball pitch, tossing 8.0 scoreless innings with just two hits and three walks allowed while striking out eight in a 3-1 PawSox win over the Clippers. The victory improved WrightÊ's record to 4-1 while lowering his ERA to 2.04. WednesdayÊ's start was WrightÊ's eighth with Pawtucket this year. He missed the start of the season while recovering from surgery for a sports hernia.

29-year-old Steven Wright is in his eighth season as a professional pitcher. In July of 2012 he was traded by Cleveland to the Boston organization. He made his Major League debut last season with the Red Sox. Wright is a native of Torrance, California.
