Vogt, Cooney Named Players Of The Week
Published on June 2, 2014 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Stephen Vogt of the Sacramento River Cats and Tim Cooney of the Memphis Redbirds have been named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 26th - June 1st, the league office announced today.
Stephen Vogt helped Sacramento maintain its first place lead in the Pacific Northern Division last week with 11 hits, seven RBIs, and two home runs. The catcher's .840 slugging percentage was the second-highest in the PCL, while his .440 batting average was tied for third. Vogt compiled four multi-hit games including a pair of three-hit performances. He finished the month of May with a .397 average and produced 27 hits in 16 games. The 29-year-old powered the River Cats to a 9-5 win at Las Vegas on May 26th with two extra-base hits, two runs scored, and a game-high three RBIs. Vogt's week was capped off when the Oakland Athletics called him up to the majors on Sunday, having him start behind the plate against the Los Angeles Angels.
Vogt has played in 66 major leagues games in the past three seasons, having made his MLB debut on April 6, 2012 with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Azusa Pacific University product was selected by Tampa Bay in the 12th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. Vogt has now captured three Player of the Week accolades in his career, including two in the PCL as a member of the River Cats.
Tim Cooney pitched the first complete-game shutout of his career during Memphis' 4-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs on May 29th. He was one out from throwing the first ever no-hitter for the Redbirds, but a two-out ninth inning single from the Cubs' Arismendy Alcantara ended Cooney's bid for club history. The lefty finished his 101-pitch outing with seven strikeouts, bringing his season total to 50 in 66 innings. Cooney retired the first 13 Iowa batters he faced Thursday, before surrendering his first of two walks in the game with one out in the top of the fifth. The Philadelphia native now has five wins on the season and a 3.82 ERA.
The St. Louis Cardinals selected Cooney in the third round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Wake Forest University. The 23-year-old is ranked by Baseball America as the Cardinals' No. 6 prospect entering 2014. The Pitcher of the Week award is the third of his career, after receiving two in 2013 as a member of the Springfield Cardinals in the Texas League.
