Scorpions Sign MLS Veteran Julius James
March 1, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
San Antonio Scorpions News Release
San Antonio, TX (March 1, 2014) The San Antonio Scorpions have added former MLS defender Julius James to their 2014 roster, President Howard Cornfield and Head Coach Alen Marcina announced today.
James, who was drafted ninth overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC, looks to join the Scorpions just in time to suit-up for the March 1st friendly against FC Dallas of MLS.
The 29 year-old Trinidadian has spent the majority of his professional career in MLS clubs including D.C. United, the Houston Dynamo, and the Columbus Crew, and has also gained NASL experience from his time with the Carolina RailHawks in 2013.
The Defender will bring more than MLS capabilities to the Scorpions roster. "In continuing to build a back line with experience, tenacity and leadership, we're adding a defender adept at multiple positions across the back line with international caps, CONCACAF Champions League appearances and over 100 games with MLS squads to further strengthen our defense," Scorpions Head Coach Alen Marcina said about Julius James.
James will join Scorpions returning defenders Jeff Jennings, Greg Janicki, and Stephen DeRoux in the back line, as well as Scorpions newcomer Adrian Cann, who has also played for Toronto FC, though not with James.
The six foot-tall centerback played collegiate soccer for the University of Connecticut, and was a 2007 Hermann Trophy candidate and Lowe's Senior CLASS Award finalist. James graduated from Connecticut with his degree in resource economics.
Prior to college, James played for the Trinidad and Tobogo Under-17 National Team that took part in the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Championship. He earned his first senior cap for his national team against Guyana in September 2008.
James comes to the Scorpions with over 116 professional appearances, almost all of which were made in MLS competitions.
Scorpions President Howard Cornfield commends James' capabilities on and off the field, "Julius is a great addition to our team. He brings not only skills, but leadership and character. Th e fans will appreciate his tenacity and fire."
The Scorpions began training on February 10 and will play FC Dallas in a preseason friendly on Saturday March 1 at 7 PM at Toyota Field. The NASL home opener is scheduled for April 12 at Toyota Field against Minnesota United. Season tickets can be purchased at Toyota Field Box Office or through Ticketmaster.
