New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The Jackals brought the thunder-sticks to Sioux City Iowa as New Jersey pounded the Explorers for 13 runs on 17 hits, earning their second win of the year and ending a frustrating three-game losing streak to St. Paul Saints over the weekend.

The Jackals realized major contributions from just about everyone in the lineup, whether by walks, sacrifices, or singles and doubles; the Jackals got it done big time against Sioux City.

The fireworks began in earnest in the top of the first when New Jersey got two runs off Explorer rookie pitcher Preston Olson. Nick Giarraputo drove in Chris Curran with an RBI single to right, and Yazy Arbelo followed with an RBI single to left, driving in Jeremy Barnes to make it 2-0 Jackals. That's the second time this season that both Giarraputo and Arbelo have had back-to-back RBI hits.

The Jackals continued to pound Olson in the top of the fourth. Kyle Nisson reached first base on an error by the second baseman, Anthony Kaskaddan, to lead off the inning, and Bryan Sabatella walked. Next, Barnes drove in Nisson from third on a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0.

Chris Duffy capped the inning with a long double into the gap to plate Sabatella, making it 4-0.

Olson didn't last long for Sioux City. The Jackals knocked him out after four innings, having been charged with four runs on eight hits.

Even with Olson out of the game, the Jackals didn't let up against reliever John Poytress. Poytress had little control; he walked four batters in one-and-a-third innings for Sioux City.

In the top of the fifth, Jose Cuevas drew a one-out walk and came around to score on an RBI double by Kyle Nisson to give New Jersey a 5-2 lead.

In the sixth, the Jackals made sure Poytress would pay even more for his wildness. Barnes and Duffy drew back-to-back walks to open the inning. Arbelo and Cuevas would respond with back-to-back RBI singles to extend the Jackals lead to 7-2.

Nisson put the exclamation point on the inning with a two-run double into the gap to blow it open at 9-2. Nisson went 3-for-4 on the night with three RBI.

Starter David Filak was marvelous in his first start of the year.

Filak, who earned a save on Opening Night, again saved the Jackals with five-and-a third brilliant innings of work. He gave up only two runs on three hits, with four strikeouts and had Sioux City baffled.

After the Jackals bullpen surrendered three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to draw the Explorers closer, the Jackals offense put the game away thanks to the nifty base running of Bryan Sabatella and the power of Chris Duffy and Nick Giarraputo.

After reaching first on fielder's choice, Sabatella stole second, before Chris Curran singled. With runners on first and second, both Sabatella and Curran stole second and third on a double-steal for Chris Duffy. Duffy then lifted a 3-2 pitch to deep center for a two-run double, his third double on the day, to extend the lead to 11-5.

Finally, Giarraputo ended any doubt that New Jersey would win this game when he blasted a two run shot to left-center, making it 13-5.

The Jackals will send ace Isaac Pavlik to the hill tomorrow afternoon at 12:05 p.m. EDST. The game will be heard live on Jackals.com with a stream courtesy of KSCJ, and will be hosted by Jackals play-by-play man, Michael Cohen on Jackals.com.
