STOCKHOLM - The U.S. Men's National Team lost to Switzerland, 3-0, here tonight in the semifinals of the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship. Team USA will play Finland in the bronze-medal game Sunday (May 19) at 4:00 p.m. local time (10:00 a.m. EDT) live on NBC Sports Network.

"Give Switzerland credit, they were the better team tonight," said Joe Sacco, head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team. "I told our players after the game that it's tough right now, but we have a chance to play for a medal tomorrow and that's something special."

Switzerland fired 18 shots on the U.S. net in the opening period, many at point-blank range, but netminder John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Anaheim Ducks) stopped them all to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.

Switzerland scored what proved to be the game's decisive goal on a two-on-one opportunity at 10:01 of the second stanza. Nino Niederreiter received a pass in the right slot and quickly lifted the puck high into the net.

Team USA started the third period with 1:30 of power play time, but could not capitalize. The U.S. then successfully killed three consecutive Switzerland power plays, including :17 of a two-man advantage. But just :29 after the final power play expired, Julian Walker blasted a slap shot into the U.S. net at 10:11 on a partial breakaway to double the Swiss advantage. The U.S., which put 13 shots on goal in the final period, pulled Gibson for an extra attacker with 2:19 left in regulation, however, Switzerland scored into an empty net with :19 left to cap the scoring.

The U.S. Men's National Team will seek its first medal since 2004 when it faces Finland tomorrow. The U.S. beat Finland in the preliminary round last week (May 8), 4-1, in Helsinki, Finland.
