Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

The Charleston Riverdogs crushed two critical home runs to fight off the Savannah Sand Gnats Wednesday night 6-3. Much like last night's contest, the Dogs (21-15) rushed out to a quick 3-0 start after the first inning with a three-run blast to left field by C Peter O'Brien, his fifth homer of the season.

RF Yeicok Calderon doubled in another run for the Dogs that stretched their lead to 4-0.

The Gnats (21-16) quickly grabbed that run back in the top of the fourth, thanks to a wild pitch by Charleston starter Cesar Vargas.

Gnats starter Steven Matz (2-1) struggled throughout his four-plus innings of work allowing four earned runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

The combination of Gnats relievers Julian Hilario, Paul Seawald and Tyler Vandenheiden slowed the Riverdogs' bats down to give the Gnats a chance to rally.

The Gnats got a comeback started with CF Eudy Pi=B1a's two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth to cut the deficit to 6-3. However, the Gnats two-out rally would fall short, giving the Dogs the Wednesday night victory, along with the series sweep.

The Gnats travel to Augusta to take on the GreenJackets Thursday night with first pitch at 7:05.

Probable pitchers: Savannah: Rainy Lara (4-1 1.42) Augusta: Kendry Flores (2-2 2.65)
