Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, RI - The Newport Gulls, who allowed the fewest runs in the entire New England Collegiate Baseball League last summer, will once again boast a plethora of talented arms this summer, that include University of Rhode Island junior right-handed pitcher Milan Mantle.

Mantle, who hails from north of the border in Surrey, British Columbia, is 4-1 with a 3.74 ERA in 10 appearances (eight starts) at URI this spring. Mantle has allowed just 17 runs (14 earned) on 33 hits with 10 walks and 24 strikeouts in 33.2 innings of work.

The right-hander transferred to URI from Walters State Community College, where he was a force to be reckoned with, going 7-1 with a 3.05 and 57 strikeouts over 42 innings as a sophomore. Mantle struck out 12 and carried his team to a victory in the 2012 TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII championship game last season as Walters State Community College finished the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Mantle helped lead the Senators to a 95-26 record in two seasons.

Mantle is the first Ram on the Gulls roster since catcher Milan Adams, who played 11 games for the Gulls in 2011.

The Newport Gulls open up the 2013 regular season at home against the New Bedford Bay Sox on Thursday, June 6th.

Since moving to Newport in 2001, the Gulls have captured the New England Collegiate Baseball League championship, the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup, an NECBL-record five times, and in 2012 were named the No. 1 summer collegiate team in the country by Perfect Game USA in Perfect Game's Top 50 final rankings, capping a record-breaking season by Newport and marking the first time ever that an NECBL franchise has been ranked No. 1 nationally.

The Gulls, which attract more than 50,000 fans annually to historic Cardines Field in Newport, recruit players from the top college baseball programs in the country, and to date have sent six alumni to Major League Baseball teams, and more than 130 players to professional baseball teams ranging from Independent leagues to Triple-A.
