Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The Bakersfield Blaze and San Jose Giants had a pitchers' duel developing for the first five innings, but San Jose pulled away late, and beat the Blaze for the second straight night, 6-1.
James Allen (L, 1-4) got the starting nod for the Blaze, and despite throwing the ball well, took the tough luck loss for the second straight outing. This time, however, he was not burned by his defense, but instead by two mistakes.
After two scoreless innings, Allen retired the leadoff man in the 3rd before Chris Lofton doubled to the gap in right-center. The very next batter Myles Schroder took the first pitch and smashed a deep drive over the wall in right, and the Giants led, 2-0. That would be all they would need.
The Blaze got one back in the bottom half off Giants lefty Ty Blach (W, 4-1), but missed a chance for more. Juan Perez doubled with one out, and Juan Silverio singled him to third, before Dominic D'Anna brought him home on a base hit to right. The Blaze were suddenly down 2-1 with two runners aboard. But Silverio was nabbed attempting to move to third on a ball in the dirt, Marquez Smith smashed a line drive to right, but Devin Harris tracked it down, and suddenly the inning was over.
From that point forward, the Giants slowly pulled away. Allen went two scoreless innings, but Wes Mugarian, in his second outing with Bakersfield, ran into a fit of wildness, walking four over 1.2 innings while surrendering three runs.
Mike Dennhardt came in to clean it up, stranding a bases loaded jam, and the Giants brought the game to the final score with an unearned run in the 9th.
On the Giants side, a trio of relievers pitched the final four scoreless innings to wrap it up.
The loss was the seventh in a row for the Blaze, who drop to a league-worst 8-25 on the season.
The series with San Jose concludes on Tecate Thirsty Thursday at 7:30pm, with the Blaze sending Carlos Contreras (1-3, 3.23) to the hill, and the Giants countering with Chris Marlowe (1-0, 1.73). Beer is just one dollar at the park from 6:30 to 8:30 in the evening!
