Buffalo Bandits News Release

BUFFALO, NY (April 24, 2013) --- The National Lacrosse League today announced that Buffalo Bandits transition player Dhane Smith has been named NLL "Rookie of the Week" for Week 16 of the 2013 NLL season.

Smith, whose 44 points (24+20) this season ranked him fifth in the league in rookie scoring, is being honored for the first time this season. He earned the award by recording four points (3+1) and four loose balls in Buffalo's game against the Rochester Knighthawks on April 20.

The 20-year-old Kitchener, Ontario native was Buffalo's first-round selection (fifth overall) in the 2012 NLL Entry Draft. With his three goals in the game, Smith (24 goals) edged Aaron Wilson (23 goals) for the Bandits' goal-scoring title, becoming the first rookie to lead the Bandits in goal scoring since Derek Keenan led all Bandits in the team's inaugural 1992 season. Smith is the first player other than John Tavares or Mark Steenhuis to lead the Bandits in goal scoring since Darris Kilgour led the team in 1998.

Smith becomes the Bandits' fifth Player of the Week selection of the 2013 season, joining Anthony Cosmo (Defensive Player of the Week - Week 7), Jay Thorimbert (Transition Player of the Week - Week 9), Alexander "Kedoh" Hill (Transition Player of the Week - Week 12) and Jordan Critch (Rookie of the Week - Week 15).

The weekly player award winners are selected by a vote of the league's general managers and head coaches.
