Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE - One night after a near no-hitter the Stone Crabs were bit by the long ball bug, allowing three, two-run home runs, falling to the Palm Beach Cardinals, 8-1.
Stephen Piscotty led the way for the Cardinals with a pair of two-run home runs, the other, a sixth inning blast by Anthony Garcia.
Piscotty finished 2-for-5 on the night with the two home runs, a double, and four RBIs, while Garcia finished 1-for-4 with the home run. Danny Steinstra finished 4-for-5, all being singles.
"It was just one those nights," said Williams. "You can't really look into one night, we have guys trying to find their way and our pitchers have to look in the mirror and see what the issues are. We'll be okay."
Stone Crabs starter Roberto Gomez (0-1) threw just five innings, allowing three runs on five hits including the first Piscotty home run.
"He had a hard time putting hitters away, the last two innings his pitch count got high which is unconventional for him," said Williams. "He throws strikes and is around the plate most of the time, for whatever reason today he struggled with his command but he has a chance to fix whatever the issue is and get back on track."
Curt Casali and Richie Shaffer each had two hits for the Stone Crabs, while the lone run of the night came on a wild pitch by Lee Stoppelman which scored Alejandro Segovia.
The Stone Crabs (1-3) have the day off on Monday before a six-game home stand at Charlotte Sports Park against the Bradenton Marauders and Ft. Myers Miracle, starting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
