TJ Sherman Commits to Trinity College

AMARILLO, TX - It can be a long journey for a young hockey player before a dream is realized.

Amarillo Bulls defenseman TJ Sherman knows about that journey that started when he began playing hockey and also baseball and soccer at the age of seven. Now nearly 14 years later, Sherman's dream has been achieved with his announcement that he has committed to Trinity College. The school is located in Hartford, Connecticut and plays out of Division III NESCAC Conference.

Sherman becomes the 13th member of this year's Amarillo Bulls to announce his college commitment. The Chesterfield, Missouri native will join teammate Ryan Cole and former Bulls' defenseman Sam Johnson at the school this fall.

"My dad told me to play whatever you like and do what you enjoy so I stuck to hockey," Sherman said. "It's been quite a journey now to get to college, but it's been well worth it."

Sherman said he first began thinking about getting a scholarship back in high school.

"When you're younger, you think about playing pro and going to the NHL," he explained. "I always wanted to use hockey to get to a better academic school than I would have without it. That's what I got with Trinity College."

Sherman has collected five goals and 19 assists for 24 points in 51 games. He is plus 33 and has three power play goals and two game winners. Sherman spent last season with the former St. Louis Bandits and said that coming to Amarillo was an easy decision.

"The Bulls had so many college commitments last year that it's hard to turn down a team that had like 13 for just one year," he said. "Only two years in the league and they have already been to nationals twice. With the record last year, I think it was something else that they continue to have success."

Amarillo Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams said Sherman has become one of the most reliable defenseman that he has gotten to coach.

"He's not a big defenseman, but he's mobile, contains well, and is very effective on our penalty killing as well as on our power play," Williams said. "With him to be able to go to Trinity College, one of the top academic institutions in the United States, it's just a testament of the type of players that we are able to recruit with the academics they do off the ice.

"It' a dream come-true for TJ to go and encompass not only a hockey atmosphere, but more importantly a great academic opportunity for him, too."

Williams said Sherman will be able to go to Trinity College and bring more depth to their defense.

"The amount of ice time he gets there will dictate on his play which again is no different than what he has learned here from us," he said. "He'll have to go there and do what he can to be in the line-up. With all of that being said and seeing the work he has done for us, I see him going there and being a team favorite and a coach's player because he works hard and listens. He does everything that you ask."
