Drive, West End Restaurants to Host Reedy River Rivalry EventFebruary 26, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL) Greenville Drive
"We are thrilled to be able to host the Reedy River Rivalry game again in 2013, as it is one of the premier rivalries in college baseball," said Drive General Manager Mike deMaine. "But we want this event to be more than just a baseball game. We know this will be a great time for fans to interact with others and enjoy themselves before and after the game."
Beginning at 10 AM, two hours prior to gates opening at Fluor Field, fans can experience live music, interact with fellow Clemson and South Carolina fans, and enjoy excellent food and drinks from participating restaurants, as well as Carolina Pride hot dogs, Pepsi of Greenville, GreenCo Beverage, and Budweiser of Greenville.
The event is free to attend, occurring on Main Street just outside the Fluor Field gates, with proceeds from food and beverage, and merchandise sales going towards Donate Life SC, an organization supported by current major leaguer and former South Carolina baseball standout Landon Powell committed to increasing organ and tissue donation.
Powell's support for the organization stems from his family's circumstances. Powell and his family recently suffered the death of his infant daughter Izzy, who passed away in January from a condition known as HLH (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis), which affected her bone marrow and her liver. In addition, Powell himself is living with autoimmune hepatitis, a liver disease with no known cure that is controlled with medication but ensures that he will need a liver transplant in the future.
"We are truly touched to be able to raise money and awareness for a great organization in Donate Life SC," added deMaine. "Landon Powell and his family are terrific people, and we are heartbroken regarding the recent death of their young daughter. We see this event as a great opportunity to give Landon, his family and Donate Life SC our support as they continue to raise awareness and make advancements for organ donation."
During the pre-game festivities attendees will enjoy music from a DJ, as well as live musical performances from Spencer Rush and Doug McCormick. A Clemson graduate, McCormick plays 200 shows a year, most recently with award-winning country music artists Luke Bryan and Corey Smith.
Athletic personnel from South Carolina and Clemson, as well as the Tiger mascot, Cocky, and cheerleaders from both schools will make appearances during the pre-game festivities. The event will have something for attendees of all ages, including face painters, balloon artists, and a magician.
The Main Street event continues throughout the game, and fans are encourage to stick around afterwards for a live performance from the Piedmont Boys, an independent country/western band based out of Greenville that plays over 200 shows across the country each year. The Piedmont Boys have shared the stage for shows in the past with Dierks Bentley, Eric Church and Gretchen Wilson.
In addition, South Carolina, Clemson and Greenville Drive merchandise will be available for purchase, where you can also enter to win your own luxury suite at Fluor Field for the South Carolina-Furman game on April 3rd or the Clemson-Furman game on May 8th.
Beginning at 10 AM at the Main Street Box Office, a very limited quantity of lawn and deck seats will go on sale at the Main Street Box Office at Fluor Field, for $18 each. These seats will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the purchase is limited to two tickets per person.
"We are extremely excited to have these tickets to offer the public for the Reedy River Rivalry game at Fluor Field," noted deMaine. "Due to the unique nature of this match-up and the agreement we have with the respective Universities to host this game at Fluor Field, we were very restricted in the number of tickets we have been able to offer to our fans, particularly since Drive ticket plan holders were given first priority."
"This will be a great event not just for the Drive organization, but for fans of South Carolina and Clemson as well," mentioned Drive Co-Owner and Team President Craig Brown. "The atmosphere inside the ballpark is going to be electric because of the rivalry, and we're looking for Downtown Greenville and the West End to match that atmosphere. The outside of Fenway Park prior to a Red Sox game has a festive vibe to it, and that's what we want to accomplish with this event on Main Street."
The game between South Carolina and Clemson highlights two programs with a historic rivalry who have both had sustained success for a long period of time. Their previous meetings in Greenville in 2010 and 2011 produced two of the largest crowds in Fluor Field's history.
