SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors defeated the Los Angeles D-Fenders 98-92 Wednesday night in the first win of the season when the Warriors trailed heading into the fourth quarter.
The Santa Cruz Warriors were led by Hilton Armstrong's 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Cameron Jones also chipped in with 18 points. Taylor Griffin logged a double-double, grabbing a season-high 17 boards along with 12 points, while Darington Hobson scored 15 off the bench - all in the second half.
The Los Angeles D-Fenders were paced by Courtney Fortson, who scored a game-high 19 points. Lazar Hayward notched a double-double, grabbing a game-high 18 rebounds and 11 points. Elijah Milllsap had a game-high six steals and seven assists, along with 15 points.
Los Angeles raced out to a 12-0 lead to start the game. The Warriors tied it up at 22 with 1:46 left in the first quarter, but the D-Fenders went on a 14-0 run and maintained their lead heading into the final frame. Los Angeles led by as much as 19, but two Darington Hobson free throws with 3:33 left in the game gave the Warriors their first lead. Stefhon Hannah's clutch three pointer with 51 seconds left put the Warriors up 92-90 and sealed the game for Santa Cruz.
The Warriors held the edge on field goal shooting percentage (40.0%-37.8%) and rebounds (60-41). The Warriors turned the ball over 36 times, while Los Angeles turned it over 22 times.
The Santa Cruz Warriors will travel to Reno to take on the Bighorns tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. Fans can listen to the broadcast on the Santa Cruz Warriors flagship station, KION 1460AM/101.1FM, or watch it live on the NBA D-League's YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/nbadleague. The Warriors will return home for a nationally-televised game on CBS Sports Network on Saturday against Maine Red Claws.
