Hawks Flummoxed by Force

February 12, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Three third period goals rallied the Fargo Force past the Waterloo Black Hawks in a 3-2 decision Monday night at Young Arena.

Trailing 1-0 at the start of the final stanza, Alex Iafallo took a feed and snapped a shot into the net on a two-on-one rush just 29 seconds after the puck dropped. The Force took the lead at 3:05 when Dave Gust found Gavin Bayreuther coming to the slot off a change, hitting him with a pass from behind the net to set up the quick chance. Brendan Harms made the score 3-1 three-and-a-half minutes later when the Hawks could not clear the goalmouth after an initial save by Cal Petersen.

It was all the offense Brendan Jensen needed. The Force netminder allowed a goal at 13:49 when Ryan Papa's desperate shot from the corner ended up on the opposite side of the crease for Brandon Salerno to knock in. Jensen stopped Waterloo's 16 other third period chances and made 48 saves in the game to claim the win.

In the first period, the Force were unable to capitalize on several turnovers in the Waterloo defensive zone, and the teams went to intermission with 14 shots apiece. The best scoring chances were not actually counted in that total. Midway through the first, the Hawks' Mark Friedman had cranked a point shot off the iron which brought the goal light on inadvertently for a moment. Then while Fargo was shorthanded minutes before intermission, Dominic Toninato missed the Waterloo net on a breakaway.

Following a series of unfulfilled power plays early in the second, Waterloo nudged the score to 1-0 at 17:17. Taylor Cammarata lifted a puck off the stick of Jared Dedenbach at the Waterloo line, sending Justin Kloos off on a rush the other way. Kloos turned into the slot from the right wing circle and pushed a shot past Jensen in traffic.

The Hawks and Force see more of each other this weekend. Waterloo travels to Fargo for games on Friday and Saturday before returning home on Friday, February 22nd to host the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
