Charge Hold off Legends for 20th Win of Season

The Canton Charge defeated the Texas Legends, 118-104, at the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco on Saturday night. The victory puts Canton at 20-12 and in 1st place in the East Division heading into the All-Star break, while Texas dropped to 12-18 on the season.

The Legends pulled out to a 25-20 lead after the first quarter, leading the Charge for the entire period and pulling ahead by as many as nine points. Kyle Gibson had the hot hand early for Canton with 11 first quarter points on 5-of-7 shooting.

The Charge clicked offensively in the second quarter, beginning the period on a 12-1 run in the first 3:31 to take a 32-26 lead. Canton ultimately outscored Texas 35-18 in the second by outshooting them 64% to 30% to take a 55-43 lead into the intermission.

The Charge' offensive barrage maintained in the third with continued shooting efficiency in scoring 35 points for the second-consecutive quarter on 65% from the floor. Arinze Onuaku scored 10 points and grabbed four boards in the third and Canton led 90-72.

Trailing by as many as 21 early in the fourth quarter, Texas would not go down quietly. The Legends went on a 13-0 run over a span of 4:01 to cut their deficit to 93-85. After Canton pulled back ahead by double-digits, Texas then employed a fouling strategy on Onuaku on four-straight possessions in the bonus.

Arinze hit 5-of-8 free throws to keep the Charge ahead, but the Legends kept close by scoring baskets on four-straight possessions and trailed 107-102 with 2:45 to play. Antoine Agudio then drilled a dagger three-pointer on the ensuing possession coupled with then Canton forcing a turnover and three misses on Texas' next four possessions to put the game out of reach.

Gibson led the Charge with 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting with five rebounds, five assists and a steal in 42 minutes. Josh Selby netted 20 points with seven rebounds and a season-high nine assists in 40 minutes. Onuaku finished with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting with 10 rebounds and two blocks in 22 minutes for his 11th double-double of the season. Onuaku came into tonight fourth in the D-League in field goal percentage at .549 and fifth in blocks at 9.8 per game and will represent the Charge as an All-Star in Houston on February 16th.

Justin Dentmon poured in a game-high 37 points on 14-of-25 shooting with three steals and six turnovers in 43 minutes for Texas. Sean Williams added a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds with four blocks in 34 minutes. Jared Cunningham scored 16 points with six rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes. All five Legends starters scored in double figures.

Canton will enjoy 10 days off over the All-Star break before returning home to the Memorial Civic Center for their next game on Wednesday, February 20th when they host the East Division rival Erie BayHawks at 7:00 p.m. Students can enjoy $5 tickets at the box office with a valid student ID presented by CSE Federal Credit Union, while it's also buy one, get one free general admission tickets at the box office presented by the Ohio Lottery.
