IceCaps Pull Through with Third Period Comeback
January 21, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL) - St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps came away with a big 3-2 victory over the Binghamton Senators in a rare Monday night game at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Kael Mouillierat and Jason Gregoire scored in the final frame while Eddie Pasquale was sharp once again, making 32 saves for his 11th victory of the season.
Jason Jaffray extended his scoring streak to four games with his assist in the first period as the IceCaps won their second straight and extended their point streak to four games.
The pace was fast and furious from the start and did not let up. St. John's got the important first goal just minutes after the opening faceoff. Following a tripping penalty to Mika Zibanejad, the IceCaps capitalized midway through the power play. Jaffray and Max Macenauer played give-and-go down low, with the captain feed Macenauer in front for an easy redirection to put the IceCaps up 1-0.
Binghamton tied it with 4:17 remaining in the second period on a goal by Zibanejad. Stephane Da Costa wheeled out into the high slot and fired a wrister on goal that was deflected in front by Zibanejad and past Pasquale, knotting the score at one.
With just 0.5 seconds remaining in the second frame, Binghamton surged ahead on a shorthanded goal by Derek Grant. The league's leading shorthanded scorer (four goals coming into Monday's game) got behind the IceCaps defence and broke in alone on Pasquale. The IceCaps' netminder made the initial save but Grant was able to slide the rebound into the back of the net to give Binghamton a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes.
St. John's came out strong in the third frame, tying the score at 6:26 of the third on Mouillierat's third. Eric O'Dell fired a shot at the net at the top of the right faceoff circle and Mouillierat was in perfect position to backhand home the rebound and pull the visitors even at two.
Just minutes later, some hard work paid off for St. John's as it surged ahead 3-2. John Albert managed to send the puck towards the slot as he got crushed into the side boards and Jason Gregoire forced a turnover in front of goaltender Nathan Lawson, banging in his seventh for the eventual game-winner.
St. John's outshot Binghamton 21-6 in the final stanza, just one off the club's season high for shots in a period.
The IceCaps went 1-for-5 on the power play while going a perfect 5-of-5 on the penalty kill.
The IceCaps' next action is against the Penguins Wednesday night in Wilkes-Barre.
