Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

December 11, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Playoff Pairing

Those who were on hand the last time the Waterloo Black Hawks met the Tri-City Storm likely remember a terrific playoff series which began less than 48 hours after the 2011/12 regular season came to an end. Waterloo advanced, earning consecutive wins to open the best-of-three set, but the Storm rallied in the third period of each game, making for exciting 6-4 and 3-2 contests. Jamie Hill had two goals and two assists, while Taylor Cammarata scored three goals. The two meetings between Waterloo and Tri-City in Kearney, Nebraska, this weekend are the first of five in 2012/13, the longest regular season series between the clubs since 2005/06.

Quick Starters

The first period is likely to be of vital importance to both the Black Hawks and Storm this weekend. Statistically, it has been the best period for both teams this season. Waterloo has outdistanced their opponents by a cumulative total of eleven goals in first periods, while Tri-City is two goals better than the teams they have faced. The first period is the only one in which the Storm have had an advantage over their adversaries.

Keeping Their Noses Clean

Waterloo and Tri-City are two of the least penalized teams in the USHL. After being assessed just ten total minutes in penalty time last weekend, the Hawks' average is down to 14.6 minutes per game, 13th in the league. Tri-City serves the least amount of penalty minutes on average at just 12.7 in a typical contest. A majority of infraction time has been assessed to both teams in two-minute increments; 67% of Waterloo's PIMs have come from minors, while the figure is 72% for the Storm, the highest percentage in the USHL.

Defensemen Ahead of the Pace

Mark Friedman scored late in the third period of Saturday's matchup against the Indiana Ice. It was the tenth goal by a Waterloo Black Hawks defenseman this season. Through the first third of the season, Waterloo's blue-liners are on pace to surpass their total from 2011/12, when they totaled 23 tallies. Friedman and Victor Newell now each have four scores, halfway to the leading individual mark of eight achieved by Ian McCoshen last year. Mitch DeMario and McCoshen are responsible for the other goals from the blue line.

Weekly Recap

The Indiana Ice clipped the Black Hawks in 4-3 and 5-4 decisions at Young Arena Friday and Saturday. The games had a similar feel, with Waterloo owning the early lead in both matchups, then being unable to tie the score as the third period came to an end. Ice goaltender Dalton Izyk made 38 saves Friday and 36 more on Saturday. Individually for the Black Hawks, Taylor Cammarata and Vince Hinostroza each delivered a two-goal performance during the series on Friday and Saturday respectively.
