Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Back to Party Town

The Black Hawks continue the franchise's longest homestand since 1999 this weekend. So far, Waterloo is 1-1-0 during the string of six consecutive games at Young Arena. The next two opponents to visit were both guests during the 2012 USHL playoffs. Friday's contest with the Green Bay Gamblers is a rematch of the Clark Cup Finals, which Green Bay claimed in a five-game series. The Hawks and Gamblers also met on September 28th in Green Bay, the season opener for both teams, with Waterloo winning 4-3. Saturday, the Black Hawks host the Omaha Lancers, who they edged during a four-game Western Conference Semifinal matchup last April. The Waterloo/Omaha series dates back to 1986/87.

Top 50

Taylor Cammarata recorded two goals and an assist Friday versus the Youngstown Phantoms. Through two appearances this season, Cammarata now has five points. Added to the 27 goals and 42 assists he accumulated during his rookie season, the Minnesota recruit is now tied with Nick Larson for 50th in career scoring during the Hawks' junior era. Rod Taylor set the Hawks' all-time point record with 189 between 1983 and 1986.

First and Last

The Black Hawks lead the USHL with an early season average of six goals per game, but also rank 16th at 5.3 allowed per contest through three games. Waterloo has been most successful in the third period, scoring nine times in the final frame. They have allowed seven goals in the second period. Special teams have been a significant part of both goals-for and goals-against. The Hawks lead the league with five power play goals, but have allowed four, tied for most on the circuit.

Stalking the Lead

With a healthy dose of team scoring, several individual Hawks are among the top point producers in the USHL through the first two weeks. Kyle Schmidt leads Waterloo with six points, tied for third-best in the league. Ryan Papa, Justin Kloos, Vince Hinostroza, and Taylor Cammarata each have five, holding a share of sixth.

Weekend Recap

Waterloo took the ice for just one game last weekend, falling to the Youngstown Phantoms 9-6 on Friday. The goal-filled affair included five combined scores in the first period, three in the second, and seven in the third. League-leading scorer Austin Cangelosi had a hat trick, while J.T. Stenglein recorded four goals and an assist. Waterloo was led by Taylor Cammarata and Justin Kloos, who scored two goals apiece. It was the second consecutive meeting between the clubs to reach a combined goal total in double digits; Waterloo defeated Youngstown 6-5 in overtime when the Phantoms visited Young Arena on March 16th.
