 Waterloo Black Hawks

Scoring in Spades

October 6, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Youngstown Phantoms outdistanced the Waterloo Black Hawks 9-6 Friday in a matchup at Young Arena which resembled a football game on the scoreboard and -at times -on the ice.

The physical contest featured hat tricks by the Phantoms' J.T. Stenglein and Austin Cangelosi and a scrap in which the Hawks' Dane Cooper took the upper hand while squaring off with Todd Koritzinsky.

Down two at the beginning of the third period, Justin Kloos scored his second of the night from a sharp angle during a power play at 4:21. Youngstown extended their margin as Stenglein completed his hat trick at 8:15. Eric Sweetman added a power play goal with just over four minutes remaining, and Stenglein recorded his fourth of the night into an empty net 21 seconds later to make the score 8-4.

Despite the deficit, the Hawks were far from finished. With an extra attacker back on the ice, Pijus Rulevicius snapped a wrist shot under the crossbar at 17:31. Ryan Papa shoveled in an opportunity 28 seconds later, brining Waterloo back within two goals as 2:01 showed on the clock. It took Cangelosi's third goal of the night, an empty net score with 12.2 seconds remaining, to finally end the comeback bid.

The first period saw no shortage of scoring at the very outset as the visiting Phantoms jumped ahead on Stenglein's steal and wrist shot under the crossbar just 1:10 after the opening faceoff. Before the contest had completed its third minute, Taylor Cammarata fired a shot past the glove of Sean Romeo to tie the score. The game continued to see-saw, first to the Phantoms with a Marcus McCrea goal at 9:21, then back even when Cammarata stuffed in his second of the game during a power play at 11:50. However, Youngstown took an edge to intermission, thanks to a shorthanded goal by Cangelosi, capping a partial breakaway at 14:07.

Youngstown built their lead in the second period on special teams. Cangelosi fired in his second of the affair during a power play at 5:51, then Stenglein added a second to his stat line during a subsequent power play at 7:38. Just 62 seconds later, Waterloo clawed closer, thanks to Kloos' put-back on the rebound of a Mark Friedman shot.

All totaled, 15 of the 53 shots on net during the game - just shy of 30% - found their target.

The Black Hawks play next on Friday October 12th versus the Green Bay Gamblers and Saturday, October 13th against the Omaha Lancers. The games are part of Waterloo's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend, presented by Great Clips and Dr. Douglas Duven of The Breast Care Center.
