Los Angeles Sparks' Delisha Milton-Jones Receives Cares Community Assist Award for AugustSeptember 20, 2012 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Milton-Jones works closely with the Special Needs Network, a program that is dedicated to the needs of under-served families struggling with raising a child with developmental disabilities. As someone who observes a gluten-free diet, her work with the Special Needs Network is especially personal to her as recent studies show the benefits of a gluten-free diet for children with autism.
"The children from Special Needs Network are no different than us," Milton-Jones said. "We have to make sure that we give them the opportunity to thrive and enjoy the same things that other children get to experience."
In addition to her efforts through the team's community outreach initiatives, Milton-Jones participated in a basketball clinic with the Mayor's Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development. The event was part of the Summer Night Lights Sparks Clinics and provided underprivileged youth in L.A. the opportunity to spend time and learn from Sparks players. During the clinic, Milton-Jones discussed the importance of health, education, and perseverance to be the best athlete possible.
In conjunction with WNBA Hoop Troop, Milton-Jones also participated in a Cartoon Network "Move It" Tour. She brought her Olympic and professional experiences to discuss the importance of staying active and following a healthy lifestyle.
The WNBA Community Assist Award is presented monthly during the season to the player who best reflects the league's passion for making a difference in the community. In recognition of Milton-Jones' charitable efforts, the WNBA is donating $5,000 to The Huddle Mentoring Group on her behalf.
