Bridgeport Sweeps Doubleheader

(Camden, N.J. - September 10, 2012) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (28-28, 59-67), swept the Camden Riversharks (24-33, 58-68) at Campbell's Field on Monday in a doubleheader. Bridgeport triumphed 5-2 in both contests. Bridgeport is 12-8 against Camden this season and trails Southern Maryland by four games in the Liberty Division standings.

In the first game, Bridgeport scored the first run in the fourth inning on an RBI double to left by Luis Lopez to score Prentice Redman. The first baseman reached base twice in the opener. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Luis Rodriguez smacked a bases clearing double to increase the lead to four. Prentice Redman collected an RBI single in the seventh frame to drive in Kennard Jones. The leadoff hitter had two doubles while Redman reached base twice. Eddie Rogers picked up a single and scored a run.

Camden scored runs in the final two innings on an RBI double by Lloyd Turner in the sixth inning and a Chris Walker RBI double in the final frame. Turner and Walker earned two hits each.

Bridgeport starter, Gilbert De La Vara (11-8), earned the victory with six innings of one run, six hit, one walk, six strikeout baseball. Rommie Lewis allowed a run on two hits in the seventh. Camden hurler, Mike McGuire (7-10), suffered the loss as the righthander surrendered one run on two hits and two walks while fanning three in five frames. Santo Hernandez gave up four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three in the final two frames.

In game two, the road team trailed 2-1 heading into the fifth innings when the Bluefish scored three times in the top of the frame and one more in the seventh. Joey Gathright tied the contest with an RBI single to right. A wild pitch allowed Angel Flores to scamper to the plate and moved Gathright, at the time, to third base. Rogers served a sacrifice fly to center. The shortstop earned two hits and drove in three runners in the finale. Rogers smacked an RBI double in the third frame and a run scoring single in the ninth. Willis Otanez reached base three times in the second contest.

The Riversharks scored one run in the first inning and one more in the fourth. Pedro Feliz picked up two hits, scored a run and drove in one. Jake Eigsti contributed an RBI double in the fourth frame for the losing side.

Bridgeport starter, Brad Thompson (5-4), earned the victory by throwing six innings of two run, five hit, and six strikeout baseball. Julio DePaula notched his second save with a scoreless seventh frame. The reliever fanned two and allowed one hit Camden hurler, Josh Walter (0-2), suffered the loss as the righthander surrendered four runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk while fanning two in four-and-two-thirds frames. Two relievers gave up one run on three hits and one walk while fanning one for Camden.

Bridgeport returns to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, September 11 to start a three game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. First pitch is at 7:05 with the gates opening one hour before first pitch. It is Tuesday Kid's Eat Free presented by Big Y World Class Market. Bridgeport will send righthanded pitcher, Jonah Bayliss (3-8, 5.23 ERA) to the rubber against Southern Maryland righthanded hurler Ben Moore (2-2, 2.75 ERA).
