Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS (Sunday, September 9): The Hudson Valley Renegades pounded the Brooklyn Cyclones 8-1 at Dutchess Stadium Sunday night to even up their playoff series at a game apiece, taking the win in front of 4,937 fans. The Renegades rose to the occasion in their first home New York-Penn League playoff game since 1999, rapping out 12 hits with elimination on the line to overcome the Cyclones and force Game 3 at the Dutch Monday evening. Hudson Valley never trailed division rival Brooklyn in the game and earned some vengeance for Game 1, when they were blanked by Brooklyn ace Hansel Robles.
The Renegades opened the scoring in the bottom of the first against Cyclones righty Luis Mateo, who had limited them to just one run in 19 innings during the regular season. Second baseman Tommy Coyle hammered a one-out shot down the right field line, zipping it past the mitt of Jayce Boyd at first base. Coyle raced around the bases and wound up at third with a triple. After third baseman Richie Shaffer flew out to shallow right, catcher Luke Maile pounded a ground ball through the middle for an RBI single, scoring Coyle from third and giving the 'Gades the 1-0 lead.
Hudson Valley added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Maile led off with a single to right, and first baseman Ryan Dunn drew a walk behind him. Shortstop Leonardo Reginatto ripped a hard grounder to third that Dimas Ponce couldn't handle; the infield single loaded the bases with no outs. Designated hitter Justin O'Conner struck out swinging, but left fielder Marty Gantt was able to hammer a deep fly ball to right for a sacrifice fly. Maile came home to score, pushing the Renegades lead to 2-0.
Brooklyn notched their only tally in the top of the fifth. Eudy Piña, who had hit two homers against the 'Gades in the regular season, led off with a solo blast to left field off Renegades starter Jeff Ames. The round-tripper cut the margin to 2-1.
Hudson Valley pushed back in the bottom of the fifth. Center fielder Joey Rickard led off with a single to shallow center field, advancing to second when Coyle drew a walk from Mateo. Shaffer hit a ground ball to the shortstop, but Phillip Evans let the ball through his legs for an error. Rickard sped around third and scored to make it 3-1 Renegades.
The 'Gades blew the game wide open in the bottom of the seventh. With new reliever Logan Taylor on the hill for the Cyclones, Coyle lined a one-out single to left. Shaffer followed up with his own single through the left side, and Maile hit a hot smash to the left side for an infield single to load the bases. Dunn hit a ground out to the right side that scored Coyle and advanced Maile and Shaffer to second and third, respectively. Reginatto slashed a fastball into the left- center field gap for a two-run double, putting the Renegades up 6-1.
Hudson Valley added an exclamation point in the bottom of the eighth against fresh arm Matt Koch. Gantt led off with a single to left, advancing to second on a ground out to the right side by Joel Caminero. Gantt swiped third base on a 3-1 pitch to Joey Rickard that went in the dirt to assure Rickard of a walk, putting runners on the corners with one out. Coyle knocked a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Gantt and allowed Rickard to reach second base on the throw. Shaffer then came through, ripping a single into center field to score Rickard and give the Renegades their final 8-1 lead. Brooklyn got a runner on with two outs in the ninth, but were unable to score.
Ames went six strong innings, allowing one run on six hits; he struck out four. Dylan Floro threw 2.2 sterling frames, giving up just one walk and whiffing one. Alex Moshier came on to retire the final out of the ballgame on a groundout to Reginatto at short.
Mateo coughed up three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks, striking out four. It was the first time he had given up more than one walk since July 20. Paul Sewald pitched a perfect inning of relief with one strikeout. Taylor gave up three runs on four hits, getting two outs. Beck Wheeler retired the only batter he faced to end the bottom of the seventh. Koch allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in his lone inning of action.
The Renegades and Cyclones will tangle Monday in the decisive third game of the NYPL Semifinal Series, with the winner heading to the League Championship Series. Hudson Valley ace righty Taylor Guerrieri will toe the rubber against Brooklyn right-hander Luis Cessa. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m., with Ben Gellman's pregame show set for 5:50 p.m. on 1450 and 1370 AM WKIP, as well as online at HVRenegades.com.
