Bakersfield Blaze News Release

In front of a nearly packed house on Saturday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark, the High Desert Mavericks continued their mastery of the hometown Bakersfield Blaze, scoring in five of the first six innings en route to a 10-2 cruising win.

For the Blaze, the problems appeared all too familiar. Stalin Gerson (L, 0-1), making his first start for the Blaze, found himself in a 1-0 hole before the fans could get their grub to their seats, as the first two Mavs opened with a double and a single. And, though the Blaze did briefly tie the contest 1-1, the Mavs never slowed.

High Desert took the lead for good in the 3rd on a Leon Landry's three-run homer, going up 4-2. That shot came after a single and a double, and again, the Blaze would try to shave off parts of the lead, but go unsuccessful.

For the Blaze, the only runs of the night came on two early solo homers, with Juan Duran slugging a blast high off the light fixture beyond the leftfield fence, and Ryan Wright a shot to left, as well.

High Desert went on to add a run in the 4th on a John Hicks solo homer, two in the 5th on a two-out, three-hit rally, and three more runs in the 6th on a Mike McGee homer and three straight two-out singles. Those runs put the Mavs up 10-2, and the story from that point was a blend of position players getting a chance to pitch for the Blaze, and the Blaze offense leaving runners on base.

Kurtis Muller made his second appearance out of the pen, and Muller, normally a leftfielder, tossed a scoreless frame. Not to be outdone, first baseman Stephen Hunt tossed a scoreless frame, as well.

Offensively, the Blaze stranded nine runners over the final five inning of the game, leaving the bases loaded twice over that stretch.

In all, the Mavs scored 10 runs on 16 hits, knocking out 16 in the hit column for the second straight game, and beating the Blaze for the 8th straight time this year.

The loss drops the Blaze back to 500 overall for the first time since April 19, and the team falls to 21-33 in the second half, with the season series with High Desert wrapping up Sunday with Chevy Youth Baseball Kids Club Day at 7:15pm at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The Blaze will turn to Tim Crabbe to help snap the skid, and the Mavs counter with Taylor Stanton.
