Former NHL Forward Brad Smyth Signs with Cutthroats

August 14, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Denver Cutthroats News Release

DENVER, CO - The Denver Cutthroats announced today they have signed former NHL forward Brad Smyth and rookie forward Matthew Gordon to their roster for the upcoming 2012-13 Central Hockey League season.

Smyth brings with him a 19-year track record in pro hockey that includes 88 games at the National Hockey League level with the Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators, New York Rangers, and Ottawa Senators.

The Ottawa, Ontario native also holds 610 games of American Hockey League experience where he tallied 326 goals and 341 assists for 667 points. Smyth, 39, was the recipient of the AHL's Les Cunningham award as the league's Most Valuable Player in 1995-96 after scoring 126 points (68 goals, 58 assists) in 68 games for the Carolina Monarchs.

"Brad Smyth is another veteran leader that will be a big asset to our club," said Cutthroats Head Coach Derek Armstrong. "He's played significant time at every level. He's been an MVP. He's made deep playoff runs. And he'll have an impact both on and off the ice for our team this season."

Smyth (SMITH) and Armstrong are former teammates who competed together as members of the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack from 1997-2001 in the New York Rangers system. By joining the Cutthroats, Smyth will end a six-year run of competing overseas in Europe where he registered 225 points in 236 games across Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Italy, and France.

The 6-foot, 200-pound forward was a product of Canada's Ontario Hockey League, scoring 152 points in 153 games for the London Knights from 1990-93.

Gordon, 23, begins his professional career after a three-year run at Holy Cross College, where he scored 10 goals and 28 assists in 99 games. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound native of Perth, Ontario becomes the second rookie to join the team (Tyler Atkins).

"Matthew is coming from a good college program at Holy Cross, and is ready to take the next step in his career with us," added Armstrong. "He's going to have a great network of older players to learn from, and we're excited to watch him grow and contribute in his first season of pro hockey."

The Cutthroats preseason roster now sits at 15 total players. The team will begin training camp in October.
