TODAY'S GAME: Jackson looks to stop a 2-game losing skid tonight in the middle game of the 5-game series at Montgomery (TB). The Generals trail Chattanooga by a 1/2 game in the SL North second half standings. Jackson is 8-10 against the Biscuits this season and 4-6 at Riverwalk Stadium this season. Of the final final 24 games, Jackson plays 11 at home and 13 on the road.
GENERALS RECAP: SS Brad Miller and RF Johermyn Chavez (1x4, 3B, 2 RBI) each knocked in 2 runs, but it wasn't enough as Jackson lost to Montgomery 6-4 on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The Biscuits broke a 4-4 tie with 2 runs in the 8th inning to win it. The Generals finished the night 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position with 10 runners left on base. Miller (2x5, R, HR, 2 RBI) hit his 3rd home run with Jackson, a 2-out, 2-run shot in the top of the 3rd inning. Reliever Yoervis Medina (1.0,3,2,2,0,1) took the loss allowing 2 runs on 3 hits in the 8th inning. Starter James Gillheeney (7.0,7,4,3,1,6,HR), in his 2012 Jackson debut logged a quality start, but didn't figure into the decision. Gillheeney allowed 4 runs (3 ER) on 7 hits while striking out 6 in 7.0 innings.
FOR STARTERS: RH Brandon Maurer ranks 4th in the Southern League with a 3.38 ERA. He also leads the Generals in wins (8), strikeouts (112) and innings pitched (128.0). In 5 starts in July, Maurer was 3-0, with a 1.99 ERA (7 ER, 31.2 IP). Since June 1 he is 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA (23 ER, 76.2IP) win 9 qualitiy starts in 12 starts. During this stretch has lowered his season ERA from 4.38 to 3.38.
OF NOTE: INF Rich Poythress has reached base safely in his last 13 games, batting .350 (14x40) with 8 runs scored, 1 double, 2 home runs, 5 RBI and 15 walks.
-> Former General pitcher Carter Capps made MLB debut last Friday, tossing 0.1 inning against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. He's the 2nd player from 2011 draft to debut. Capps, 22, joins RHP Trevor Bauer (AZ) as only two from last year's draft to have appeared in Majors.
BEST IN THE SOUTHERN LEAGUE: The Generals lead the league in ERA (3.27). The Generals position players also lead the league in total bases (1556), slugging percentage (.403) and home runs (94).
RECORD SETTING PACE: The Generals 67 wins is the fastest to that mark since 2005. The Generals are 3 games off the pace off of the 2005 Diamond Jaxx that won 83 games and 5 off the pace of the 1999 Diamond Jaxx that won a record 84 games. Last season the Generals won just 68 games and the most won since becoming at Mariners affiliate in 2006 was 75 that season.
#VIVALAROMERO: INF Stefen Romero has hit safely 31 of 38 games (w/AB) with 18 multi-hit games with Jackson since his promotion, batting .342 (50x146) with 26 runs scored, 12 doubles, 3 triple, 8 home runs and 38 RBI. Romero has recorded an RBI in each of his last 4 games, batting .444 (8x18) with 6 runs scored, 3 home runs and 6 RBI.
FUNKY COLD MEDINA: Despite allowing 2 runs and taking the loss last night, RH Yoervis Medina has allowed 3 runs in his last 36.0 innings in relief (0.75 ERA). During this 23 game stretch has limited opponents to a .202 (25x124) average, while walking 13 and striking out 36.
"KISS IT GOODBYE": Over the course of the last 25 games, the Generals have hit 26 home runs, including 8 multi-homer games. The Generals lead the league with 93 homers this season. Mobile is 2nd with 84 long balls.
MILLER TIME: SS Brad Miller has hit safely in 13 of 16 games since his promotion to Jackson, batting .311 (19x61) with 9 runs scored, 1 double, 3 home runs and 7 RBI. He currently leads all Mariners farmhands with 49 multi-hit games this season, batting a combined .335 (158x471) with 98 runs scored, 34 doubles, 5 triples, 14 home runs and 63 RBI. His 158 hits are currently 2nd-most in the Minor Leagues this season, while 98 runs scored rank 4th.
