
Vermont Rallies Late For 4-3 Win Over Batavia

BURLINGTON, VT --- ÃÂ The Vermont Lake Monsters rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, including a John Wooten safety squeeze bunt to score Addison Russell with the go ahead run, to complete a three-game sweep of the Batavia Muckdogs with a 4-3 New York-Penn League victory on Monday night at historic Centennial Field.
The Lake Monsters trailed 3-1 in the seventh when Bruce Maxwell doubled with two outs an d, after a walk to Jacob Tanis, scored on a Chad Lewis RBI single to center to get Vermont within a run. Kelvin Rojas led off the bottom eighth with a groundball double down the leftfield line off Batavia reliever Brandon Creath, who came out of the game after walking Russell.
Yunior Castillo came on to face Brett Vertigan, who was able to lay down a sacrifice bunt on an 0-2 pitch from Castillo moving the runners to second and third. Vermont tied the game when Castillo uncorked a wild pitch on 1-2 count to Chris Bostick, who was then hit by the next pitch giving the Lake Monsters runners on first and third. Wooten then pushed a bunt towards first base and Russell was able to rush home before any play could be made at the plate to give Vermont the 4-3 lead.ÃÂ
Batavia took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning, including back-to-back doubles from Garrett Wittels and Breyvic Valera off Vermont starter Michael Ynoa. But the Muckdogs would get just two more hits the rest of the game, a one-out Patrick Wisdom double in the sixth and Steve Ramos two-out single in the ninth. Andres Avila took over for Ynoa to start the fourth inning and allowed just one hit with one walk and three strikeouts over four innings of relief. Drew Gagnier (2-1) tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning for the win, while Ryan Dull a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts for his second save.
Muckdogs starter Kyle Helisek was solid over the first six innings, allowing just an unearned run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Creath (0-2) was charged with three runs on three hits in one-plus ininngs to tak the loss for Batavia (24-23), which has now lost five straight games.
The three-game sweep was the second of the season for Vermont (swept State College July 7-9) and pushed the Lake Monsters back to the .500 mark at 24-24 since July 24th. Vermont now heads out on a six-game roadtrip to Hudson Valley and Brooklyn before the NY-Penn League All-Star Break next Monday and Tuesday. The Lake Monsters return home to historic Centennial Field for a six-game homestand August 15-20 against Staten Island and Brooklyn.
