Quakes Hang on for 8-7 Win on Friday
June 30, 2012 - California League (CalL) Rancho Cucamonga Quakes
Lancaster, CA - Jonathan Garcia's two-run double with two outs in the seventh put the Quakes ahead to stay, as Rancho held on for an 8-7 win over the Lancaster JetHawks on Friday night at The Hangar in Lancaster.Trailing 6-5, the Quakes managed to load the bases without the aid of a hit against JetHawks' reliever Patrick Urckfitz (0-2). C.J. Retherford tied the game with a sac fly to right field, bringing home Scott Wingo to make it 6-6. After Austin Gallagher struck out for the second out of the inning, Garcia came up clutch, smashing one off the scoreboard in right field to plate Leon Landry and Alexis Aguilar, making it 8-6.
The JetHawks pulled within a run against Ryan O'Sullivan (1-0) in the bottom of the inning, as Rafael Valenzuela homered to make it 8-7.
That's as close as the JetHawks would get though, as O'Sullivan finished the seventh with the lead intact. Scott McGough worked around three base-runners in the eighth, before Eric Eadington worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 11th save of the year.
The Quakes went back and forth all night with the JetHawks, as neither team seemed to be able to hold the lead.
Lancaster grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third against Quakes' starter Jordan Roberts, as Domingo Santana singled home George Springer.
Leon Landry's two-run single in the fifth gave the Quakes their first lead of the night at 2-1.
Steve Smith ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning, as he walked the first three hitters of the inning, which eventually led to a 3-2 Lancaster lead.
Chris O'Brien's fourth round-tripper of the year, a three-run shot off of Lancaster starter David Martinez, put Rancho in front 5-3 in the sixth.
The JetHawks took advantage of a Quakes' error to score two unearned runs and three total runs off of O'Sullivan in the sixth, giving Lancaster a 6-5 advantage.
Rancho (3-6, 40-39) will look for two of three in the Lancaster series and a 3-3 road trip with a win on Saturday night, as they take on the JetHawks in the rubber game of the three-game set. Angel Sanchez (6-3) will throw in the series-finale, while the JetHawks will send Zach Grimmett (2-5). Game time is 7:00pm on Saturday night.
On Sunday, July 1st, the Quakes return to The Epicenter for a Valencia Commons Dodgers' Fun in the Sunday, featuring former Dodger great "Sweet" Lou Johnson. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
