May 14, 2012 - Southern League (SL1) - Tennessee Smokies News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies split a doubleheader with the Jackson Generals Monday night, winning Game 1, 15-4, and falling in the nightcap, 3-1. The Smokies are now 16-23 on the year. The Generals improve to 23-16 on for the 2012 campaign.
Coming off back-to-back losses to the Generals, the Smokies wasted little time in scoring on Jackson starter James Paxton (3-2) in Game 1. Junior Lake led off with a walk and Logan Watkins drove his third home run of the season over the right field wall to give Tennessee the early 2-0 lead
Leading 2-1, the Smokies' offense would come to life in the third inning. Lake led off with his first home run of the season. Watkins followed with a walk and Jae-Hoon Ha singled, both came home on a rare two-run sacrifice fly to right by Rebel Ridling to give the Smokies a 5-1 advantage.
The Smokies' offense continued to stand out in the fourth, after Nate Samson lined a double down to left field and Lake walked, Watkins drove both home on a double. Ridling brought Watkins home on an RBI single. Justin Bour put Ridling on third with a double to deep center and both came home on a Mike Burgess two-run double to extend the Smokies lead, 11-1.
Jackson's Steven Proscia hit his second home run off Smokies starter Trey McNutt to bring the score to 11-2.
The Smokies bats stayed hot in the fifth, Jim Adduci singled and was followed by a Lake double and a Watkins walk. Ha drove in Adduci with an infield single, Lake and Watkins motored home on a Bour two-run double to put the game out of reach at 15-2.
McNutt (1-3) picked up his first win of the season, the righty went a season-long five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and fanned five.
In the nightcap, all the scoring came early. Jackson opened up the first with an Eric Campbell solo home run off Tennessee starter Dallas Beeler for a quick 1-0 lead.
The Generals added two more in the top of the second as Kalian Sams hit a two-run shot for a 3-0 lead.
The Smokies responded in the bottom half, Bour and Burgess were both hit by pitches, and Adduci walked to load the bases. Bour trotted home on an Elliot Soto RBI single to make it a 3-1 contest.
Beeler (0-3) took the loss for the Smokies despite throwing a seven-inning complete game. He allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out three.
