FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs' infield picked up two key additions for the 2012 season with Binghamton's John Howell and Albany's Brian Bullard joining the fold for this upcoming summer.
Howell made his mark as a freshman at Binghamton in 2011, making 48 starts at shortstop and also being named an America-East All-Rookie Team member by unanimous selection. The 5-11, 180-pound sophomore has made 26 starts for the Bearcats so far in 2012, of the team's first 27 contests. He has amassed a .275 average, with seven extra-base hits and has yet to be caught stealing in three attempts. Howell has also proven to be a catalyst for the club, as he leads the team with 17 runs scored. The Liverpool, NY native hit a whopping .500 in his senior season at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Bullard burst on the scene in his freshman year in 2010, where he was also named to the America-East All-Rookie Team. He hit .326 while making 47 starts at second base. He has started 17 games in 2012 for the Great Danes, sporting a .951 fielding percentage. The 5-11, 175-pound junior is a native of West Nyack, NY and attended St. Joseph Regional High School.
"We are looking forward to having John and Brian with us this summer," said SwampDogs head coach Darrell Handelsman. "They are both quality infielders whose versatility will provide depth at a few different positions. We anticipate both of these guys playing a big role in our quest for a CPL championship."
