Mississippi Surge News Release
The Mississippi Surge was perfect on the power play Friday night at Pensacola. Unfortunately for the Surge, they only had two power play opportunities in the game and lost to the Ice Flyers 3-2.
It didn't take long for sparks to fly as the Surge's Billy Siers and Pensacola's Andrew Howes each got five minutes for fighting just six seconds after the opening face off. Mike Carter put the home team on top with the only goal of the first period, coming at 7:02.
Pensacola stretched its lead in the second period courtesy of Matthew Robertson's goal at 4:48. Each of the first two goals were even strength goals, but the power play would be a big factor in the third period.
The Surge didn't have a power play until late in the second period when Robertson went off for tripping with 44 seconds left. It didn't take long for the Surge to convert as the penalty carried over into the third period. Adam Stuart scored for the second straight game, just 51 seconds into the third period to get the Surge within a goal. Howes regained the two goal cushion for Pensacola two and a half minutes later. The Surge got its second power play goal of the game when Rob Campbell scored with 2:22 left to play.
Campbell's goal extended the Surge's streak of scoring at least two goals in every game this season. They are the only team in the Southern Professional Hockey League to have scored at least two goals in every game this season.
