EL SEGUNDO - The Los Angeles D-Fenders have acquired four-year NBA veteran guard Orien Greene, it was announced today. The D-Fenders claimed the rights to Greene from the Utah Flash during the 2011 NBA Development League Expansion Draft.
Greene, who most recently played for Halifax Rainmen this season in Canada, has appeared in 131 career NBA games over four seasons with Boston, Indiana, Sacramento and New Jersey, averaging 2.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 11.9 minutes. Originally selected by the Celtics in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2005 NBA Draft, the 6-foot-5 guard played in a career-high 80 games his rookie season, averaging 3.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists.
In 2010-11, Greene played in the D-League for Utah where he averaged 16.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 2.00 steals in 39 games. A year earlier for the Flash, Greene totaled 16.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.50 steals over 53 games.
During his senior season in 2005 at Louisiana-Lafayette, Greene tallied 11.4 points, 4.6 rebounds 4.0 assists and 2.70 steals in 25 games and was named the All-Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year. Greene transferred to Louisiana-Lafayette in 2002 following two seasons at Florida University (2000-01, 2001-02).
In addition to his NBA experience, Greene has played internationally for the Shougang Beijing Ducks (China-CBA, 2010-11), Marinos de Anzoategui (Venezuela, 2010), MyGuide Amsterdam, (Holland-Eredivisie, starting five, 2008-09), Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem (Israel-Premier League, 2007-08) and the New Zealand Breakers (Australia-NBL, 2007-08).
Greene's acquisition came after the team waived guards Anthony Johnson (0.7 PPG, 0.3 RPG in 3 games) and Al Nolen (3.0 PPG, 1.0 RPG and 3.5 APG in 3 games). Both players were added after six D-Fenders players signed to NBA training camp rosters.
Additionally, Terrence Roberts, who participated in the Oklahoma City Thunder training camp, has returned to the D-Fenders rounding out their roster to 10.
