TULSA, Okla., Nov. 12, 2011 - The Tulsa 66ers, proud affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder, officially tipped off the 2011-12 preseason with their opening practice of training camp Saturday morning in Tulsa.
Sixteen players participated in a two hour training session to kickoff camp.
"Obviously, the guys have a lot of stuff coming at them, but I thought they did a great job with their focus," 66ers head coach Nate Tibbetts said. "I thought we went hard and guys competed, and that is exactly what we want."
Eleven of the 16 players to begin camp are new to the 66ers organization. Dante Cunningham, Jerome Dyson, Marcus Lewis, Ryan Reid and Billy Rush are the returners from last season's squad.
"There are a lot of new faces, it's good," Tibbetts added. "The more we are going to be around them the more that they are going to feel comfortable with us. One thing I like, we have a bunch of guys that are coachable, and that it is really going to help us along the way."
Defense was the clear focus for the opening practice.
"We are a defensive team, it is who we are," Tibbetts said. "We think that it is important to build the foundation of our defense, and that started today."
The 66ers will return to the hardwood tonight at 6 p.m.
The 66ers open the 2011-12 season with back-to-back road contests against the Idaho Stampede on Nov. 25 and 26. Tulsa's home opener is slated for Dec. 3 against the Austin Toros at 7 p.m. inside the Tulsa Convention Center.
