A native of Medellin, Colombia, Serna began his professional career with Deportivo Independiente Medellin of Colombia's First Division in 1995. He also added 36 assists, finishing with 140 points in the regular season and had a goal and assist in six playoff games.
After Serna's breakout season in Miami, he went on to play for nine other professional teams. He was named MLS Player of the Week and to the league's Best XI in 2001, and was then picked fourth overall in the 2002 MLS allocation draft by the New York/New Jersey Metrostars. Serna also played for the New England Revolution and Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS, finishing his career in the league with 57 goals in 124 games. He remains in the Top 25 in Major League Soccer's all-time scoring list, with his five hat tricks are also tied for the most all-time in league history.
