Corvallis Knights News Release
The Corvallis Knights have landed their first Oregon State player for the 2012 season.
Freshman Michael McCall, a right-handed pitcher from Gig Harbor, Wash., has signed with the defending West Coast League champions, president Dan Segel announced Wednesday. He's one of several Beavers who will play for the Knights next summer.
The 6-foot-2, 155-pound McCall starred at Gig Harbor High in Gig Harbor, Wash., the alma mater of OSU sophomore pitcher Scott Schultz, who also played for the 2011 Knights. McCall was rated as the No. 11 player in Washington, and No. 498 nationally, by Perfect Game USA heading into his senior season; he played for the Tacoma Narrows U-18 club team.
The Knights have also signed right-handed pitcher Justin Fischer of UC Santa Barbara, and third baseman Nate Roberts of Seattle University.
Fischer (6-2, 195) graduated from Agoura High in Calabasas, Calif., and is a freshman at UCSB, where he will be coached by ex-Beaver/Knight Andrew Checketts and former Knights' pitching coach Jason Hawkins. He also played for the Quakes Baseball Club.
Roberts (5-9, 170) played for the Knights briefly in 2011 before being sidelined by a wrist injury that hampered him throughout his sophomore season at Seattle. He was 0-for-9 with one RBI in two games for the Knights and hit .172 with a homer and eight RBIs in 30 games for the RedHawks. He missed the final 1/3 of the spring season with the wrist injury.
Roberts played at Moses Lake in 2010 and was one of the WCL's most productive hitters. He was sixth in the league with a .335 average, had a league-leading 35 RBIs and was a second-team All-Star.
He started 50 games as a freshman at Seattle in 2010 and hit .241 with a homer and 22 RBIs. He was a standout at Central Kitsap High School in Silverdale, Wash., where he hit .410 for his career.
Roberts is the seventh members of the 2011 Knights to sign for the 2012 season. He joins pitchers Mark Trentacosta (UC Irvine) and Chris Mendoza (Santa Clara); catcher Dane Lund (Mt. Hood CC); shortstop Alex Foulon (Mt. Hood CC), and outfielders Cade Gotta (Riverside CC) and Matt Nylen (Western Oregon).
