UFL Names Players of the Week

September 20, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Tuesday, September 20, 2011 - Three players who will meet in the biggest game of the United Football League's 2011 early-season slate earned Week 1 UFL Player of the Week honors.

A week before they clash in Virginia on Saturday, Las Vegas Locomotives quarterback CHASE CLEMENT and Virginia Destroyers running back DOMINIC RHODES shared the UFL Offensive Player of Week 1 award, while Locos cornerback MARQUIS FLOYD claimed the defensive honors. Sacramento Mountain Lions return specialist Aaron Woods was named UFL Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Destroyers and Locos contest the first-ever home game in Virginia Destroyers history at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex at 7pm EDT / 4pm PDT on Saturday, September 24. Tickets are available through the official UFL website: [2]http://www.ufl-football.com/virginia-destroyers/VirginiaTicketSales

United Football League Players of Week 1

Offense Chase Clement, QB, Las Vegas Locomotives

Dominic Rhodes, RB, Virginia Destroyers

Defense Marquis Floyd, CB, Las Vegas Locomotives

Special Teams Aaron Woods, WR, Sacramento Mountain Lions

Clement led the Locos to a 23-17 victory Saturday night at the Mountain Lions by going 20-for-28 for 233 yards and rushing four times for 32 yards and a touchdown. His rushing score came on a naked bootleg from three yards out in the first quarter and was the Locos' first touchdown of the new season. Clement also completed a league record-longest 83-yard pass to wide receiver Samie Parker, adding to his UFL record for the longest completion in the UFL Championship Game (75 yards, 2010 vs. Florida).

"I thought Chase Clement played really well," said Locos head coach JIM FASSEL. "I thought he was anxious at the beginning of the game but he really settled down. That's pretty normal for a first game for any quarterback. We got him settled down a little bit.

"I told him when we went into this game, I said ‚¬Ëœhere's the plan, but we don't have any idea what they're going to be about. Really, we won't.' The key for us was to be able to analyze and adjust the way we were attacking in the game. And I thought we did a pretty good job."

In 2010 Clement moved from third on the depth chart to leading the Locos under center in the 2010 UFL Championship Game and was named the game's MVP as he completed 15 of 25 pass attempts for 239 yards and 2 touchdowns. He capped a stellar college career at Rice by being named Conference USA MVP as a senior in 2008 as he threw for 4,119 yards and 44 touchdowns.

Rhodes scored a rushing touchdown on Thursday night in the 23-13 Virginia Destroyers win at the Omaha Nighthawks, and now is the league's all-time touchdown leader with 11. He has scored at least one touchdown in eight of nine regular-season UFL games played. Rhodes set numerous UFL records with the Florida Tuskers during the 2010 UFL season, including single-season touchdowns (10), most consecutive games with a touchdown (seven), single-season rushing yards (551), single-season carries (127), single-season rushing touchdowns (nine) and most 100-yard rushing games in a season (three). He also caught 11 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, and was second in the UFL in kickoff-return average (21.7).

During a six-year Indianapolis Colts career, Rhodes rushed for a game-high 113 yards and scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl XLI win over the Chicago Bears. He rejoined the Colts at the end of the 2010 UFL season and helped them to secure a postseason berth.

Floyd is an Arena Football League veteran who had a stellar UFL debut on Saturday night for the Locos, posting five total tackles, a fumble recovery, a 35-yard interception return and two pass breakups in the 23-17 Locos victory in Sacramento.

Woods posted 101 return yards for the Sacramento Mountain Lions in a losing effort against the Locos on Saturday with 94 yards coming on four kickoff returns and seven yards on three punt returns. His 46-yard kickoff return set a new league record, and Woods now has the UFL records for longest kickoff return and punt return of 60 yards against Hartford in 2010, which was the first punt return for a touchdown in UFL history.
