Southern Illinois Miners News Release
CRESTWOOD, Ill. - The Miners ninth inning rally fell short as they lost, 5-3, to the Windy City ThunderBolts Saturday night at Standard Bank Stadium. The Bolts struck for five runs against Thomas Campbell in the first inning, a deficit the Miners were never able to overcome. Ryan Basham?s first home run of the season capped the five-run rally.
Southern Illinois loaded the bases in the seventh and then got two men aboard in the eighth, but failed to score in both innings. Nate Hall led off the ninth with a walk, and pinch runner Cannon Lester scored on Eric Suttle?s double to cut the lead to 5-3. Wes Alsup struck out Sean Harrell and Will Block to end the threat and nail down his fourth save for the Bolts.
Windy City starter Bryant Cotton picked up his fourth win of the season. He held the Miners hitless through five and two-thirds innings before Southern Illinois got on the board with three consecutive doubles in the sixth inning. Will Block and Sean Coughlin each picked up an RBI in the rally.
Campbell allowed just one hit after the first inning, at one point retiring 13 batters in a row to keep the Miners in the game through the middle innings. He finished the sixth inning and allowed just four hits in the game, striking out a season high six batters, but took the loss.
The Miners will finish the first half with the finale of this three-game series with Windy City on Sunday as David Harden (4-1, 2.40) makes the start for the Miners against Dustin Williams (6-2, 3.90) for the ThunderBolts. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Standard Bank Stadium. The Miners will begin the second half at home against River City on Friday, July 15 at 7:05 p.m.
